This is the sixth Westinghouse radio of the 780 family, that I came to restore (refs. 1-5), and the second true "A Christmas Story" radio model 780-X from 1939, with the four horizontal speaker grille bars. The radio was missing its knobs but I was able to get the correct ones - after this video was taken. The X version is very collectible because it was used as a prop in the movie "A Christmas Story", directed by Bob Clark, and first released 39 years ago in November 1983. Nine years old Ralphie Parker's life is dominated by his one wish, to get a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun with a compass for Christmas. He is listening on this very Westinghouse radio to the show "Little Orphan Annie" and waiting for his Secret Society Decoder Pin, not knowing that the message would be deciphered as "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine", - the show was sponsored since 1934 by the Ovaltine company. The movie has since become a holiday classic and is shown numerous times on television during the Christmas season. Even without this background the radio is exceptional in many respects: a beautiful cabinet, a super-sensitive 7-tube 5-band short-wave receiver with a tuning magic eye and six automatic station push-buttons, made from real tortoise swirled catalin. The radio features an extra front-end RF amplifier, slug-tuned Intermediate Frequency Filter coils. a huge 12" field coil speaker and a switchable phono input, that lets you connect a record player. I installed a new 3.5mm closed circuit phone plug to let you also connect mp3, cellphones, and what have you. The Parker family's radio is in terrible condition with the magic eye tube substituted with a red lamp and with wrong knobs. My radio is documented in detail in ref.6 and is for sale. Watch it here playing various sources, also including an AM transmitter.
