Given as a gift
The Buick Roadmaster Series 80C was originally a gift from General Motors to Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha. They got it during a long trip to the United States in 1939.
The car would soon prove to be an important part of the Royal Family's history.
During the war, the car was hidden away.
Upon returning home on June 7, 1945, King Haakon and Crown Princess Märtha were passengers in the car. The streets of the capital were full of flags and jubilant crowds on the drive from Honnørbryggen to the Palace.
Behind came Crown Prince Olav and the children in a similar car, C-1473, a 1938 model, which belonged to the Nagell-Erichsen family. The same car was used when Crown Prince Olav was driven around the streets of Oslo during the liberation days in May 1945, with Max Manus as an armed guard in the front seat. A-1 returned in early June.
For the big occasions
The venerable car was used by King Olav in connection with the signing in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim in 1958 - and by the King and Queen in connection with the signing in 1991. It was also used on Crown Prince Haakon's official day in July the same year and during the filming of "Max Manus" in 2008.
It would take almost 29 years from the Crown Prince's 18th birthday until the car was again used in the official context of the Royal Family. It received the necessary safety and technical review and prepared for the rides in Asker and Oslo on 17 May 2020.
