14 J class locomotives were build in Roanoke Shops between 1941 and 1950. Engines #600-#613. 13 were scrapped by 1960, only #611 was saved.

I've guarded part of that railyard when it was under lease from the railroad to Freight Car America, that round building is still there, bunch more added since.

Very impressive to observe the construction process of the N&W j class locomotives which were the most powerful 4-8-4 type locomotives ever built, the J class had a handsome appearance with their streamlined body. The N&W rr had an impressive variety of steam power during the steam era and their best examples of steam locomotives were the J class, along with the A and Y class series articulated types.
