Leslie Ballamy invented the split-axle independent suspension under my 1937 Ballamy Ford Special.
Sidney Allard built a dozen specials before WWII of similar design, using a version of Ballamy's suspension.
After WWII Sidney went into production, and this Allard - a 1948 L-type tourer - is one of 191 made. There are reckoned to be 20-30 left.
Allards are best known for the 1950-on J2 sports car - a stonking V8 in a skimpy two-seater - which came third at Le Mans in 1950 and won many sportscar races across the USA against expensive opposition from Ferrari and Jaguar.
The L-type like mine was a tourer for the family. These, and the more comfortable M-type model with wind-up windows - were successful in rallies, combining V8 power in a robust chassis. Sidney won the Monte-Carlo rally in 1952 in a P1 saloon.
I have owned this one for 30 years. It has always been rough 'n ready but we got many miles out of it with the kids, especially on family rallies in France. It was the best car for taking the goalposts to football training. But it wore out and got pushed into a lock-up ten years ago.
This is the first start-up with a rebuilt engine, front suspension and steering.
The engine is a Ford V8 sidevalve with a relieved block, forged pistons, twin carbs, 3/4 cam, Offenhauser heads. MOST important, the crank and rods were properly balanced by "Vibration Free" which transforms the experience.
It's like a friendly old dog - get it in 3rd (top) gear about 30mph and it just lopes along, woofing and waggling its tail a bit.
