This process took a LONG time coming. Once it actually started it took a long time to finish as well. I decided that I was going to use Rustoleum primer (which ironically looks like a rusty color!) and then the custom matched oil based final gray color. Since I spray paint outside in my driveway, I need to wait for not only the rainy season to end, but for warmer weather to show up. Paint day, usually earlier in the mornings, needed to be less windy to keep surprises blowing into the paint/finish to a minimum.
Between the base, cabinet and misc pieces, I used the entire quart of primer. Then for all those same pieces, another 1/2 gallon in total final gray paint (2.5 coats). Very happy with the original color match and how well the paint went down. The purple cheapie HF HVLP sprayer worked wonderfully, at least from my limited point of view and HVLP "experience". My mix for the primer and paint was the same 2:1 and I cut it with Acetone. I also added a drying agent and hardening agent. Extremely happy with how the parts turned out. The painting between primer and final coat across all pieces actually occurred over a few week period. Weather, time and curing all played a role.
