Brings back the memories. My first car was a Champion Starlite Coupe. It was older than I was and didn't run. I got it for a $25 roll of silver quarters. Got it running after a week of trying.

Ok. I should have made it plural. But, it was $25, and they were silver quarters, and they were in rolls. My mistake. I stand corrected. Good catch. This was back in the early '70s. I used to have a paper-route that I collected payments for. I saved a lot of those coins.

Absolutely one of the coolest cars ever! I like the Commander which had longer front fenders and larger headlamps, different dashboard. But, all were cool designs. These were huge sellers, you can often see them in old films during street scenes.

The shape of the front, and rear fenders and the bullet nose all went to the VW Karmann-Ghia only a few years later.

Do you wonder why the world seems to be steaming past at such a fierce rate? Do you find yourself living in the distant past? The far distant past? Sightseeing in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in Mom’s cousin Walney Cleaver’s 1950 Studebaker coupé - looking out the wrap-around back window, laughing hysterically as 7 & 5 year olds tend to do. Walney had “customized” his car with a 3rd headlight, from J.C. Whitney, in the middle of the pointy grille. “Looks like a goddamn spaceship” Dad would say. "Which way is it going?" the comedians all said. Fred Allen quipped: "Next year Studebaker is coming out with a model that you won't be able to tell if it is going sideways".

Thanks, great overviews. Interestingly, when I finally got hooked on cars, the Bullet nose & many Studes were unappealing due to ROAD SALt Rust/, whereas some of MERCS, GM were some SEEMED , less prone .. My first was a 1954 V8 Ford 2 DR, WITH 57Engine****289(?, supposedly)/4BBL/ Dual exh//mild custom in 1962 ish…., etc.Mechanic BUILD , in Colombia CITY INDIANA SERVICE station?…..

Wrong. While the name was never affixed as a badge on the car, the spelling in all the print advertisements from 1946 (introduced as a '47 model in Spring of '46) through the end of production in model year 1958 was "Starlight" in every case, NEVER "Starlite."

also a footnote the commander had a V8 instead of the straight 6

The '50 Commander used Studebaker's 245.6 cubic inch side-valve six with 102 horsepower. The Commander V8 debuted in the '51 models, 232.6 cubic inches and 120 horsepower. This was the first modern OHV V8 in the low-price field, introduced at about the same time as the original Chrysler 331 cubic inch "Hemi" in the high-price range. The Stude V8 beat Chevy and Plymouth to market, and Ford didn't offer any OHV V8 until the '52 Lincolns, and kept the "flathead" V8in the Ford and Mercury lines until model year 1954.

As a child, I remember this car when it was new in 1950! If you compare it to nearly every other car of that year, except the 1950 Ford, it was way ahead of them, stylistically! Unfortunately, the 'coupe' version of all cars, i.e. one seat, is impractical!
