It looks like you installed the thermostat upside-down. That new style thermostat opens towards the integrated spring, which is the opposite of the old style shown earlier in the video. I almost made the same mistake. For the newer style thermostat, the little integrated spring would be up towards the thermometer.

That is a standard automotive style thermostat. It opens downwards like you say but the important part is the wax pellet is on the bottom towards the engine so it can get hot and open. If it worked like a check valve that would be a problem but this style thermostat is designed to open against the flow like it does in any automobile engine.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the bad info. I guess I need to take mine apart. Luckily I’m only to the point where I have the bottom plate siliconed on.

I purchased a new gauge only to find out I have the housing with the 'plug' as you say. So no gauge then? Was this common? Should I care?

I don't know how common it is. But will the gauge fit after the plug is removed?
