Nope, yall... it's a Champion 6-cylinder Starliner; all Champions wee 6's, all hardtops were Starliners... no "V-8" brightwork, and the dashboards were very different between the two. When I saw my first '53 at my dealer's as a 10 year old, I broke into bawling... had never seen ANYthing so beautiful. I've NEVER gotten over it! Lucky lucky owner; and THANK YOU for not hot-rod-RUINING it!

Either a Studebaker Champion or Commander. Designed by Raymond Loewy, this was unquestionably the best-looking American car of the 1950s.

The lines on this car are mind boggling for 1953. I can't grasp why this was not a massive sales leader. Congratulations to the lucky owner of this beauty.

Studebaker grossly mishandled the production of this car. For 1953 they anticipated a 4 to 1 mix of sedans lover coupes yet the demand was the opposite. They were also stymied by the unavailability of automatic transmissions. Their supplier, Borg Warner, suffered a crippling 6 month strike. They had other production bottlenecks also. The new longer body would fit around corners at certain points of the assembly line, so the workers had to shut the conveyer off and push the body around by hand at certain points.. They just couldn't get finished product out the door. And lets not talk about their QC and rust issues. Most potential buyers got tired of waiting, and cancelled, talking their business elsewhere. A lot of the sucttlebutt in the books and historical articles blamed labor for Studebakers woes. I say it was management. They had the tiger by the tail and blew it.

That's a Starliner coupe, designed by Raymond Loewy. The streamlining made these run as fast as they looked; the Bonneville Salt Flats saw several land speed records set by Starliners with blown V8s.

This 53 Study was the most beautiful American production car of the 1950's, and is more beautiful than any American car since, IMO. It was billed at the time as "the foreign look". The word "Hawk"was applied to this body style much later - a basic design that persisted until the very end of Studebaker, in the mid 60's.

Back in those days my dad was a car buyer, not my teen self. When I asked him about the Studes he seemed to fear them going under. The 53, as shown was so beautiful but way ahead of its time. I thought the 4 doors were horrid. The 53 Starliner coupe was art work.

So pure and graceful. Compare this to any other 1953 American sedan and you will see how low and sporty and shocking it looked when new. The front and rear fenders continued until the 1964 Gran Turismo Hawk.

Had one is my first car in 1966. Mine was all white and cost $125. 232 cubic inch big block V8, power steering ,automatic. Gas was 27 cents a gallon and I couldn't afford it! Lol. Couldn't stop it couldn't turn it but would go like hell in a straight line.

My brother bought a '53 Studebaker like the one in the video. It was a great body design saddled with a really ho-hum drive train. I heard that the Engine-transmission were often replaced with Chevrolet V8s and transmissions.

To get some facts straight, this is not a Hawk and not a flathead V8. This is a rare early edition Tri-Star 1953 Studebaker Champion hardtop. Beautiful car. Thanks for posting.

You're absolutely right! This is a rare early edition, Tri-Star, 1953 Studebaker Champion. Originally equipped with a 169.6 cu in flathead 6 cyl. Commander models, were equipped with the 232.6" OHV V8, and were available with the same body style. This one is very nicely two toned, using the same sections, as the factory did. Although, the lower half, and wheels. Don't look like an original color, to me? It is still Very Sharp!

YA! Gorgeous car & outstandingly beautiful wine color! Wonder if that color was a standard choice back then. My guess is NO! But notice the rather poor alignment of the hood & trunk to the body fenders!!! Big gaps! Notice how those generous whitewalls help to bring out the beauty of the color! My guess is this car was a restoration. Raymond Loewy designed a "knockout" here! "Ach du lieber, mein schatz"!

Some time ago a vid went out whereby a classic car buyer Wayne Farini, I think, went to see a lady whose husband had a 1953 red Studebaker Champion in their garage and unfortunately passed away some years ago. Wayne couldn't believe his luck, it was perfect, had done only a handful of miles. Looked like it straight out of the showroom. The lady said her husband made her take her shoes off before he let her into the car, which got me sniggering. Don't know what he paid for it, as he never says, but it wasn't long before he had got into a show and winning something with the Study, vowing "It's mine, and it ain't for sale". I know how he felt, as that is the same model Stoodlebaker I had many years before, and the same color!

Raymond Loewy design. Way ahead of its time. Would not be out of place in the most modern of company. Forerunner of Hawk series. Should have been way more successful than it was, quality control and production engineering let a brilliant design down.

Not a hawk but the pre- cursor to the hawk series starting in 1956. No not flathead v8, it was a modern Ohv V8, years ahead of both Ford and Chevrolet. Most advanced car design from 1900 to ,in actuality, 2000 era. Decades ahead of the big 3 barges bathtubs and refridges.. The coupes as shown often cited by various critics as the most beautiful auto design the first 100 years of the industry . Then it was joined by another Studebaker, the Avanti. Again this car was decades ahead of the big 3 and still.looks modern today in the 2020's. No big 3 car from the 60s forward can ever be mistaken for "modern" .

A flathead v8? that's funny. They made their own engines, very modern design and they were good. in i think 2years those V8 motors were being supercharged, from the factory baby! One more thing, I know everybody likes a diffferent car but I'd put one of those beauties up against anything from that time. the time. Is possibly a top5 or top10 all time great design. Raymond Lowey was one hell of a designer. He did the Avanti too and others for Studebaker.

They were a beautiful designed automobile, they had a reliability problem though, thus the were called steady breakers, I had a 1951 four door for a short time, it burnt more oil than gas and then rusted quite rapidly, the bullet nose was not a good looking auto, when the Hawks came to be that changed, then the lark finished them, the Avanti was a beautiful creation, but it was too late!
