Thanks for another great video. I love them "sea-turtles" (green Johnsons) I always found (back in the '70's) a 10hp would do about 20mph; an 18 would do about 24; and a 22 cubic inch 25 would do about 29mph. Then, I started messing with the '77 and up (avoid the '76), 31 cubic inch 35hp motors, and they would do about 32-34mph, properly propped. In fact, they would beat a 40hp Mercury of the same vintage. This was on small, light boats. Later, I learned the 35hp had a different block than the 25 and 30 (Example: 1984 - look up the part numbers). It was the machining of the bypass ports. The 35 had "bridge-port" porting whereas the lower hp motors (25-30) had "finger-port" porting. I experimented with these powerheads and learned that the porting really did make a difference. The bridge-ports would "kick-a--", especially with some weight in the boat - they would keep on going; they would separate the men from the boys............. As far as idle quality........... well, maybe not quite so good. But, not bad enough to fret over. To this day, my favorite OMC is a 1984 35hp. It has the stronger gears and dog (3-dogs), than the 81-83 35's. And still has the gear driven throttle linkage. Best of all, it has bridge-porting. It will walk the dog. Today, I see these young guys putting 35hp carbs on their 25hp motors. They get more performance, but they still don't get the performance of a "bridge-port" 35. But, you can't tell them anything, so I don't try.

That is a pretty close assessment of what I get out of those motors you mention. That is great information on the 1984 35hp OMCs. That would be a great motor to find. Thanks for watching!

I bought a QD15 last January at an estate sale. I went through it this winter. Seems like a low hour motor because the compression was pretty good for a 10hp, and no internal rattles. The sound is louder than the qd 17, 18, and 19. But good runner. I made a video about a week ago. Thanks for the ride.

I like the QD-15s. I like the exhaust note of that leg with the cast Seahorse. It is a little louder and I will admit the QD-16 and up are nicer to run for extended periods of time. I do really like the way the '54s run though. I have two of them right now. One is a bit nicer than the other. It is one that I am really considering doing a cosmetic restoration on, which I never do. I do have a few green Johnsons I'm thinking about doing that on though. My rope start RD-16 is another one. Thanks for watching!

This one is a nice runner. It moves out very well. The 50s OMCs are excellent outboards. Thanks for watching!

Another beauty for sure, the original patena is just fine, wipe it down with an oily rag to shine it up.... Love the whine on these old gearcases

It's a nice running solid motor. I think it looks better on camera than it does when you're standing in front of it. It doesn't look too bad from the front, but the back half doesn't look so good. There is quite a bit of corrosion and paint loss. We'll see if I ever decide to redo the paint and decals. I like the gearcase whine of these older ones too. Thanks for watching!

Good runner Ben. I love the gear whine of these old motors. I have a QD16 I bought at Constantine I want to go through. I don't know if it will run as strong as this one.

Thank you, Greg. I love the whine of the older gearcases on these motors too. I have three QD-16s. They are great motors. I'm torn on my favorite one. I love the 53s with the front shift and the twist grip throttle, but the screw on coil is a pain to take on and off. The 54 has the up and off cowl, and are usually very strong motors like the 53s, but they, like the 53s are still a bit on the loud side. The 55s are quieter and more refined, but don't seem to have quite as much punch as the previous years. Still quite strong, but just not quite as much grunt it seems. They are more pleasant to run all day on the lake though. Mine all seem to run close to 18mph. Might be able to get a little more with the right prop. Thanks for watching!

Hey just pick one up do i have to remove powerhead to change impeller? Thanks 1954 10hp johnson
@oldjohnnyrude8404
Жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your new motor. You do not have to remove the powerhead on the 10hp and up motors. Only the 5.5 and 7.5hp 50s OMCs need to have the powerhead removed to drop the gearcase. There is an access cover over the shift rod coupler on the side of the leg. Remove one of the shift rod coupler screws completely and the lower unit will drop with the four bolts around the water pump bulge. Thanks for watching!

Thank you. I really like the QD-15s as well. The 1953-1955 QDs all have their own aspects that I really like about them. Yours runs very nicely and the cosmetic restoration looks great. Thanks for watching!

Hello again, I'm still jon. I had asked you a question a few months or so ago about my qd15.. anywho's, it's running great and I have put a nine and one quarter inch by 11 inch prop on it, but have not taken it out yet. My main question that I'm struggling with is I see everybody and their brother wants to put the cavitation plate height at the bottom of their boat. I have a old Alumacraft 12-footer much like yours there and when I put the motor on with no type of shim it sets about two and a half to three inches lower than the bottom of the boat. It runs great with the original weedless prop that came with it but since I have repropped it I also cut a little piece of wood to raise the motor up higher. It's still sits about an inch and a half low and I just wanted to have your opinion on if I should go with the 7/8 shim or should I just leave it out? Sorry I get to babbling. Also, I have the motor trimmed up into about the third Groove and it planed out nicely and quickly with that original prop. Just looking for your ideas and opinion on this because all of your stuff runs so good! Thank you for any help

I apologize for not replying sooner. Sometimes comments and questions get lost in the shuffle. The 9.25x11P prop is actually an 18-25hp prop. The 10hp prop is typically a 8.5x8.25P prop and the big prop for a 10 is typically a 10x10P. As long as it is working well you can go ahead and run it. If it is lugging the motor down so it doesn't run at its rated WOT RPM of 4000-4500 rpm it can be tough on the small wristpins in these motors. As for the motor height, you are probably fine with the 7/8 spacer, but I wouldn't want it any higher. These motors need to be run deeper in the water than the newer motors. I run OMC classics on my Aerocraft with a 7/8" spacer under them without issue, but I wouldn't run them any higher on that boat either. Thanks for watching!
