I bought my first car, a green A30, in 1965. A year or so later it failed the MOT needing a lot of welding so I bought another one (black and called Thunder Clap) and kept the original for spares. I had to do all my own servicing and repairs but learned such a lot doing that. I ran that for years while all my mates had mini's and 1100's etc. Good cheap reliable transport.

Back in the days when you could tell one model from another, even just by hearing the engine. Yes I know they weren't perfect, but it's a sad reflection of our industry that the E-type Jaguar is still the most beautiful and iconic car we ever made.

I agree with you regarding the E Type and for a saloon I would say the Citroën SD 19 / 21 both beautiful and iconic

Such a groovy car...we've had two of these and the Mrs wants another one............whenever we went out in our "Peanuts" they always made people smile, and we were always getting in to conversation with people who had owned one....including one fantastic old couple who wanted to sit in it because they had done their "courting" in one....of course we let them, but we didn't leave them alone for two long in there, you never know what they might have got up to!!..8-)

My first car. I was eighteen. Bought for £5. Second owner. Date of manufacture was 1955. Installed a Morris 1000cc Gold Seal reconditioned engine and A35 gearbox and prop-shaft. It was black and I covered it with multi- coloured acetate flowers. It was a common sight in Dundee in 1968. I gave the car to my brother when I bought a more up to date car. The registration was DYJ882. The last I saw of the car was that it was one of the "street freaks" in Dundee, but I didn`t like what the owner had done to it.

The first time I ever drove a car was in an Austin A30. I was about 10 years old and we pootled about in a big flat paddock on my Dad's farm. This video is wonderful, love the view from the back seat, the sound of the engine and transmission and seeing the trafficators deploying!

Our family had an A30 way back when, great little car, real gem though so very low-powered. Original colour was bronze, believe it or not: We had it re-painted powder blue.

Little wonder the A30 and A35 have become popular and prices have risen accordingly. A lovely example of a car and a very enjoyable video.

Hard to believe it has that much power - I suspect the ECU has been chipped..lol

:) An ECU in 1955, don't think so. To add power you'd make the cylinder heads bigger and adjust the compression ratio - proper mods

A real blast from the past, my father had a 1955 Morris Minor, I remember very well the trafficators... more trouble than the rest of the car!

Surprisingly spacious inside - no need for padding or crumple zones in those days!

Odd to ride along and feel what driving on the left-hand side of road is like

It's a very odd perspective from that camera angle. It feels weird to me and I have always drove on the left. But imagine putting a camera to the rear right hand side of a left hand drive car and drive on the right and you would have the same or opposite but equally odd perspective. Camera should be up front or behind driver showing drivers view.

Had they not invented flashing indicators back then. I remember as a kid, those stupid orange things protruding out from the sides of the car. Could people really see them? They would have been better off sticking an arm out of the window.

Gary ~ hand signals were generally used as well as the indicators, for turning (left and right), plus hand signals for slowing down, stopping, and indicating ready to be overtaken.
