Beautiful boat. My dad build one of these kits in '56. We rescued it from under his parents' porch in the early 80's, refastened/refinished, and launched it. My brother and I learned to ski behind it. I have it now, with a '57 Evinrude Big Twin

now thats a nice boat! I have a a 1957 16 foot starcraft that I have had since I was 14 years old, I'm 66 now, all the wood has been replaced, transom twice, ( the aluminum hull never goes away) been through 5 engines, including a 4 stroke 55hp homelite (very heavy), and is now running a 35hp 4 stroke suzuki. very quiet.

Boy just the sound of that old Johnson Bring back memories, I swear I can smell that sweet two stroke exhaust, I always liked that! I had an engine very similar to this for awhile when I was a kid it was the same engine hood as this one where it hinged in the middle but this was some kind of a special engine it had all these gold colored pieces on it and where this one said Sea Horse on the engine mine said Golden Jubilee. The engine did not run when I got it but I pulled the carbs and cleaned up and kits in each and it ran like a top after that I ended up trading it for something, I dont remember what/ I traded a saddle to get the motor. This engine totally reminds me of that one!

This boat was given to me in 2002. It had been stored in a dirt floor barn since the 50's. The boat was started but never finished as you can see from the photos. The boat was mostly there but I took some creative liberties with the build as you might have back then as the kit was sold with just the wood. The original owner purchased the steering wheel and column and cable/pulleys as well as the windshield when he started the build. The boat came with decals but did not come with assembly instructions. I found out what the boat was and I got an idea of what the finished boat would look like after receiving some blue prints from the Chris Craft Div. of the Mariners Museum. I began the finish/restoration project in the fall of 2011 and completed the build in Nov of 2012. The upholstery was completed in the spring of 2013. The engine is a 57 Evinrude Big Twin 35hp with e-start and e-choke. I live in NW Wisconsin.

I can remember similar wooden boats on lake Simcoe on weekends and vacations in 1958 when we lived in Toronto as a kid. When we came back to the UK my mother's younger brother had bought prewar Chriscraft with a flathead marinised Ford V8, I teased him about the lighter more modern boats I had seen in Ontario , modem American type outboards and lightweight plywood boats were becoming easily available in UK by 1959

Great looking Chris Craft. The period outboard makes it even better. My dad had an all wood boat about the same size when I was a little kid. I remember he was always fixing hull leaks in his. Every time I smell polyester resin it reminds me of "helping" fix that old boat.

A little trick i was taught when i bought my first outboard was regardless of weather sea or fresh water, every time you are finished for the day, Run some clean anti freeze through the engine before storing, it stops any corrosion before it even starts. It worked very well for me and i never has any trouble at all with the engines, this goes for inboard as well as outboard. The guy who told me said that he used a car engine and left the cooling system as it was, putting that in the boat, he put an electric fan on so it was tunning all the time the engine was live.

That motor could have been the 2nd outboard on the boat; boat owners would very frequently trade in outboards every 2 or three years back in the day since HP ratings were increasing and quality was improving rather steadily in the 1950's. The outboard motor industry was finally building a good product that almost anyone could operate.

You didn't need a battery to run those motors; magneto ignition and they still had the recoil starter front-and-center for ready use. OMC didn't put the recoil behind a cover for a few more years. It wasn't until the late 60's that they omitted the recoil entirely from the 40 HP motors with electric start; my mid 60's Lark had one and with the old generator long gone I only used the electric starter for cold starts. Warmed up she fired up with half a pull; turn over one piston and she was running.

Reminds me of the many days I spent on the water, as a boy. I skied behind almost an identical rig at Lake Altoona in the early 1960's. I think it had the identical engine. Didn't the Johnson 35 have a pull start, too? There were two things I always carried with me when I was on the water - spare spark plugs and wrench and a spare new battery
