This is the absolutely stunning 1955 NSU Max Special 250 from the Sammy Miller Museum collection of motorcycles.
Looking at this motorcycle today it’s hard to believe it was made well over half a century ago.
NSU was a German vehicle manufacturing company founded in 1873. Initially they made knitting machines and later evolved to making vehicles.
In 1969 NSU was acquired by Volkswagen and merged with Auto Union (another German automobile manufacturer) and renamed Audi NSU Auto Union AG, which ultimately became what’s known as Audi today.
In 1955 NSU became the biggest producer of motorcycles in the world. The company also holds world speed records in 1951, 1953, 1954 and 1955.
The engine of the NSU Max Special is a 247cc single cylinder air cooled unit. The valves of the engine are operated by an eccentric-driven overhead camshaft, which is a very unique design.
Lubrication of the engine is by way of a dry sump system.
The fuel tank capacity is 3 imperial gallons or just under 14 litres. Fuel is delivered to the engine via a Bing carburettor.
The transmission is four speed with an enclosed chain primary drive.
Stock the engine produced 17 horsepower at 6500rpm.
The NSU Max Special has a pressed steel monocoque frame with a rear suspension unit that is built into the frame. The front forks use a leading link design.
Both front and rear suspension are hydraulically damped.
According to the owner’s manual the top speed is an impressive 72 miles per hour, or 78 miles per hour with one person only on the motorcycle leaning forward.
Brakes are internally expanding drum front and rear. Both the front and rear wheels are 19 inch.
Dry weight of the motorcycles is 364lbs or 165kgs.
The NSU Max Special 250 is a reliable, well engineered and superbly finished motorcycle.
Let’s watch Sammy Miller on board this stunning NSU Max Special 250.
Imagine how you’d feel seeing one of these machines cruising down the road in the 1950s. What a special motorcycle it is.
Thank you for supporting The Classic Motorcycle Channel.
