In this episode, Tim discusses '56 Buick speedometers - common problems & fixes. Tim shares the common way to break your speedometer that you may not know about.
On GM's, I have seen three types of mechanical speedometer drives yet they all use magnets. Yours appears to the be alloy bell that is a magnetic metal combined with a copper allow. They are stamped or deep drawn. It is driven over a bar magnet that over-comes the spring that keeps the needle at zero. The second type is a larger steel bell over a bar magnet. The third type is a medium steel bell that spins over a short bar magnet. The fast the bell or cup spins, the more drag is placed on the magnet. As it over comes the clock spring, it allows the needle to move. Adjustment for most is the stationary post that holds the spring. Bending it very slightly will allow is to show a faster speed or slower speed. In the factory, these are run at either 45mph or 55MPH and adjust to read correctly at this speed. There was a speedometer repair shop in Sioux City, IA. that repaired other gauges as well, but add the diesel injection pump by Rousamaster in their line. They we not able to get an Delco contract for digital gage repairs as the 90's models started using. But you indicated a location in Las Vegas that repaired these and had parts. What was the name as I couldn't hear well. Thanks for the video. DK, ASE master tech since 78

I've owned more 56 Buicks than you can count on your fingers and toes and, fortunately, never had one with a speedometer that didn't work. However, I have had to repair three 1958 Buicks and one 1957 Buick. It's a bear of a job, but doable. I've never done a 56, but the procedure for 57-58 is basically the same. I think you meant the temperature and oil pressure gauges in your video. Ammeter is upper left and is disconnected by removing the terminal nuts. Same for the gas gauge. Those are electric. With 57 and 58s it's recommended to disconnect the battery before starting the job as you can easily short some things out under there. Having a 1/4" drive socket set and right angle screwdriver also helps.

Ahhhhhh my lord! Thank you Tim! Your knowledge is invaluable to a younger man like me. If you ever bring that car to the Back to the 50's at the Minnesota State Fair you come find me! I'd love to absorb more of your experience with that car!!! I'm in the only 56 Buick Century in Apricot and Castle Grey 4Dr Hardtop there!

God bless you Higgs! I almost broke my back and brain trying to figure out how to reach the temp gauge from under the dash. So I need to remove the dash. Awesome! Many thanks.

You can get at everything with the top of the dash off, but still may need to do some underneath work, too. You'll also have the steering column stabbing you in the chest while working.

My bet is the speedometer. It's seldom as easy as the cable.
