I don’t think this video can be representational of a player I’ve only known through his legend. Strong and evidently confident and capable on the ball, but were the amount of stray passes direct to the opposition typical of how the game was played in that era with far more ‘hit and hope’? The way everything is dissected and analysed these days the press would have a field day of negativity about his performance. I can only assume this wasn’t considered one of his better games and would love to see more of him at his imperious best.

He played more of a defensive role it seems, still played a good game but didn't attack much. I think there was more long ball in them days, with Wing Halfs expected to get the ball quickly to the forward line. I think this style was more common in the English game though & held them back compared to countrys like Brazil, Germany & Italy etc. Edwards was known as one of the best long passers, so it was probably a tactic of his mangers for him to hit it long at times. More so in games where they wanted him to defend more, a few good passes in this & a few over hit. 3 of his passes vs Scotland though were world class, 1 he played to Don Revie was insane giving the weight of the ball & that he was rooted to the spot when he hit it.

I have heard so much about how good Edwards was and how great he would have become but I am interested to know just what were the real skills he possessed that made some esteemed sporting journos around at the time and some that still are, proclaim him to have potentially been the greatest English footballer that had ever lived. He could do everything well; several things very well; and one or two things extraordinarily well. That meant that he could play in almost any position on the field, was strong in defence, direct, and carried a goal threat. He was physically imposing, confident, and determined, with a will to win. He may have lacked the refined skills of John Charles, but he had a greater competitive streak and was stronger and nastier in the tackle. His greatest strengths were his all-round ability, that thunderous tackle, and the strength and control to run through opponents. If you can defend, create, and score, you are special.

The first few ballon d'Or seemed to favour older legends of the game, Edwards was the first young player to make the top 3. Paddy Crerard did an interview & was shocked Wright was 2nd over Edwards, he said he was't in the same class as Edwards. The opinion of the day & since suggests that's true, despite this ballon d'Or ranking. I've always wondered why Wright came 2nd, anyone know? Was 1957 a landmark year in his career? A great season for Wolves? You need to remember he finished above players like Finney, Puskas & Charles to. So by finishing above Edwards, it shouldn't be seen as a negative against Edwards tbh.

You can make as many excuses as you like re weight of ball, heavy boots etc but there’s no getting away from it, the level of football in the 1950s is utterly abysmal by modern standards.
