Introduced as a successor to the LeMans-winning Jaguar XK120, the 1954 XK140 brought many improvements to the 2-seat British sports car. Like its predecessor, Jaguar offered the 140 in three different body styles; an Open Two Seater, a Drop Head Coupe, or a more comfort-oriented Fixed Head Coupe. Still powered by the 3.4-liter DOHC in-line 6, the 140 models became the first Jaguar sports car to offer an automatic transmission. The William Heynes designed 6-cylinder produced 190 horsepower in base form or 210 horsepower with the optional C-Type cylinder head. Along with a larger, more comfortable cabin, the XK140 also boasted improved drivability and slight visual changes to the front and rear of the vehicle.
To increase the cabin space of the XK140, Jaguar moved the engine, firewall, and dash 3-inches forward. Doing so gave the driver and passenger much more legroom to address the criticism of the XK120. In addition, mechanical upgrades consisted of a switch from Burmann recirculating ball steering to rack-and-pinion. Finally, using telescopic rear shock absorbers instead of lever arms significantly improved the handling of the XK. Performance for the time was excellent, with a top speed of over 120 MPH and 0-60 MPH times in the mid-8-second range.
Born on March 13, 1956, this XK140 MC carries chassis number S 818417 BW. It began life as a Pastel Blue over Red Drophead Coupe with a French Grey soft top. From 2002-2003, Bassett’s Inc, a renowned Jaguar specialty shop in Rhode Island, completed a no-expense-spared nut and bolt restoration. As a result, the car now sports a stunning Black on Red color combination. In addition, new leather, carpeting, and refinished wood interior trim brought the cabin back to life. Rated at 210 horsepower from the factory, the 3.4-liter in-line six is mated to a 3-speed Borg Warner automatic transmission. At some point in its life, the XK was converted to a manual transmission and then back to an automatic like it originally came with. While it boasts its matching numbers block, the cylinder head is from a contemporary Mark I Jaguar. The engine fires up instantly and idles beautifully, making this a car you can drive and enjoy. A Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate (Number 73159) is provided along with the sale.
