Its sad there are not very many forward look mopars left. I am currently restoring my 2nd 1961 plymouth fury . I lost my 1st 1 in a garage fire January 2014. I will admit I almost lost my temper the day it happened. I know some folks will say its "Just a car "but that car was very special to me

I share your feelings because I think that the forward look cars are some of the greatest styled automobiles ever produced

The cars were so good they needed crazy commercials to reduce demand! However why call the guys gay? I think they looked good with their "forward look" shirts. Then again I made a "forward look" mailbox to go with my 1950's style home built in 1989.

I made my mailbox a "Flat Sweep" look pulling in the drive late one night...

Terrific cars.....Chrysler Corporation was definitely the styling leader and all divisions sold extremely well (pre-1958 recession), even De Soto and Imperial had a record sales year, never to be repeated. Too bad the '57 models were plagued with so many quality control issues.

The '56 DeSoto is one of the most beautiful 1950s cars! I'd 10x have one over a '57 Chevy (and I'm a GM guy!)

If you had watched it to the end you would have gotten your clue. It was a teaser commercial that ran two weeks before the new models were introduced. It was to gin up interest in the new, but as yet unseen, 1956 Chrysler Cars. And why the jab at male dancers? Do you think Fred Astaire was gay?

Ginger Rogers was the real talent - matched Fred's steps backwards and in heels.

Don’t judge by today’s artistic standards. This was the start of the jet age and all this hoopla was to gin excitement for the 1956 model line

Yes! Thanks for saying that! We need to remember an ad from 1889 would seem weird to a 1956 audience, and how weird would a 2023 ad seem to a 1956 audience?!? Probably even weirder than the 1889 ad, actually! Art, especially ephemeral art, like ads can only be properly compared to others of their time, Not ours. Everyone thinks that the mid 1950s was all about early Rock and Roll. It WAS NOT. Rock and roll was what the kids were doing. Over the top musical productions were still for the grownups, So this "works" for Mom and Dad. Sure It seems cool by today's standard for Chuck Berry to be doing car ads in 1956, HOWEVER his audience THEN were in NO position to buy NEW cars! 1956 teens were driving 1946 cars!

Do you think this is all new to me? I've got thousands of TV Commercials uploaded here. I"ve been in business my whole life. By any standard, this commercial is strange and weird by 1956 standards. I have every right to judge it on it's artistic or historic value.

Jeez what abysmal visual audio quality! It would be cool to see this cleaned up digitally and colorized.

jeez, you've never heard of a Kinoscope. This was taped live and then the tape was filmed and then broadcast on airwaves again and re-recorded. Kinoscopes are pretty much impossible to improve.

@ Brian Melody; You’re not thinking this is exactly what it looked like when broadcast in late 1955, are you? Yes, you are.

Sounds a bit like West Side Story. I wonder if Leonard Bernstein saw this and was inspired. 🤔

Every once in a while ad agencies feel a need to go to abstract concepts. It never works. Do you remember the first ads for Infinity? Nothing but nature shots and gurgling water.

The real irony is that the '56 models didn't look all that much different from the '55 models.

Not sure if I agree with you there, I owned a 56 DeSoto, my first car and it was distinctly different than a 55, the teeth grill of DeSoto fame was gone, the tail of the car sported big tail fins with Christmas Tree style lighting. Imperial too looked very different. Chrysler had an entirely new front end treatment. Plymouth and Dodge were pretty much the same, but the Middle Price and upper range cars were very different looking.

at 48 seconds, the girl on the left screws up the dance step as she steps out early. Why not do a retake? Or maybe they had done so many retakes, they were sick of her mistakes. Anyhow, it was a nice experiment in advertising something other than the car.

The majority of TV was live back then. We’re at the point where events in the past are judged by current conventions due to a lack of thinking and understanding.
