This is a 1957 California traffic safety message designed to deter driving under the influence. The message is given by cowboy actor Clint Walker as he reminisces about the history of the Old West and uses one of his movies, “Cheyenne” as a backdrop for this tv spot. He states that the Old West was a very dangerous place and compares the renegade Indian to drunk drivers of 1957.
The racist ignorance of Hollywood at the time and those that created this spot is obvious. The following dialogue is part of the film narration, read it and listen to the film.
What do you think?
(Law and order finally came to the west with the arrival of the police officer. Outlaws were apprehended and jailed. Bands of Indians were driven from the territories, settled by the white man. It took a long time before the big peace talks were held between uncle Sam and the Indian Nations that finally put the stamp of safety on the west.)
