Best thing about this video is it brings you back to when commercials actually showed the product they were trying to sell and the features of such product. As compared to the commercials of today where you often ask at the end "What were they selling in that commercial?"

Wow! Cool! A car with absolutely no trunk space! And just a year or two before the invention of the shopping mall when "trunk space" became as necessary as comfortable "tennis" shoes. Nice job, Ford!

@DamnStraightM35A2 The film clip was labeled 1958. Is this one of those model year things, or was it wrong?

It did not always work as advertised and it rattled like crazy. Neat operation when it worked.

...Then the ford roof folds into the trunk...oops! The four metal roof arms just twisted and now the heavy top is cutting into the top of the rear quarter panels! - but seriously, didn't a lot of these have alignment problems after a while?

The retractible hardtop system was originally designed for the Continental Mark II. It soon became evident that it was too expensive for the Mark II, so Ford decided to use it on the regular Ford in order to recoup at least some of the development costs. Most of the system was also used on the TBird convertibles from 58 to 66, and Lincoln Continental convertibles from 61 to 66.

They only made Skyliners 1957, 58, and 59. The soft top convertibles were called Sunliners. That one is a 57.

@USAutoIndustry Well, the Ford being shown in the clip has single headlights, so it's a '57. 1958 had quad headlights.

Some cars offered 4 headlights in 1957. They weren't fully legalized nationwide until '58.

I knew a guy years ago that worked at the local Ford dealership back in the 50's. He said that those skyliners were horrible to work on. All the gear and motor mechanisms in trunk were troublesome. Didnt have the bugs worked out.

That is one of the most amazing cars ever made. Thank Bob McNamara for killing the retractable hardtop! Ford was so far ahead of the game back then. Think about it. Ford had a retractable hardtop convertible in 1957. Now they're everywhere. It took the rest of the auto industry 50 years to catch up!!!

Yet they didn’t sell many. And I’m sure those 9 electric solenoids would fail eventually.
