Those retractables were magnificent examples of real engineering!
@joestephan1111

Most of them proved so bad and worked so poorly that dealers were instructed by Ford to weld them into place. They stopped production of them. 1950s engineering was not as good as today's. Computers didn't then exist. Neither did massive lawsuits. This was another great example of a good idea gone bad

@@joestephan1111 Computers already existed in the 1950s, but instead of fitting on a desk it took the entire floor of an office building to hold less than ten of them and no screens but punched cards. All in a deafening din.

Have you seen the crash test w an old car vs newer model? I think Chevy did it. It didn't end well. You would have had the engine in your lap, had one been in there. I think the frame was failing and couldn't be saved. The other car was ugly, but you'd have easily survived a minor 30 mph fender bender...it's up here.

When cool was king. But also see how there are no crumple zones in these panels. We gave up cool for safety. When someone got in a wreck, when these cars were new, people died. Nowadays they stand on the side of the road and get on an app to report a claim. Maybe bruised, seldom bleeding and almost never dead.
