Up until the early 2000`s there was a very similar model still in use in the laundry I had access to. There were a separate spinner for it and it didn`t have the wringer like yours have. It was mostly a spare machine in a corner not used as often. It did a strangely good job compared to the fully automatic models that finished the job much faster. I think it was the long soaking time that made the difference. I filled it with cold water, let the agitator run for a bit (it was on a timer knob 3 - 15 mintues) and let the water heat up until it reached desired temperature. It did a 40C wash reasonably fast, but a full tub of 60C or 95C took a while. You had to turn on the agitator once or twice during the wash. It had manual filling and draining with a turn of a knob. It wasn`t a lot of work, but it wasn`t fully automatic and required a bit more attention. The tub took quite a big load and did as mentioned a very good job.

Great machine you have there. I still use a 1980s hotpoint twinny weekly, asci have very low cold water pressure modern automatics won't work . But yours is even faster because wringing is quicker than spinning . 👍

WOW, they were so economical with water if you started with hot whites and used the same water for colours as it got cooler. Brings back a few memories, my Gran had one until the mid 70s. She got rid of it after my arm got stuck in the wringer when i was helping, still got the scars.

For a better wash, I think you could also leave the pump on to have it kinda like a recirculation pump, ifyou get what I mean.

Wonderful machine, but you need to add more water so that you get what is called "rollover", which is the circulating of the fabrics from top to bottom; you will find that the machine will work much better, there will be less strain on the transmission of the agitator, and your fabrics will get cleaner. Also the use of more water allows for there to be less friction between the fabrics and agitator, and reducing wear on the fabrics.

This may not have all the bells and whistles like a modern machine has but more than makes up for it in terms of the power of the agitator and that’s why top loaders were popular in the US from the late 1940’s onward since you would wash a fairly large load of laundry in 30 minutes time and were spun out fairly well. The most popular top loading machines after the post war period were the Whirlpool/Kenmore belt drive washers since Sears’ owned a majority of Whirlpool’s stock. Kenmore appliances sold in huge numbers since they were cheaper than everything else on the market and payment plans through Sears’ credit allowed you to own a Kenmore automatic laundry pair or any Kenmore appliance at a reasonable price. While Kenmore appliances were good since they were made by Whirlpool, the Whirlpool counterparts weren’t quite as flashy and had their own features such as the Surgilator agitator and 2 speed feature on their dryers in the early 60’s.

Great to see, but the point of the bi directional writer it to make rinsing easier. Out machine into sink. Out sink onto top of machine.

They made things to last in those days. If you soak the laundry overnight, you can just wash in cold water to save electricity.

Did you actually use any detergent? Amazing condition for its age, but I would prefer a twin tub myself, as you can wash and spin at the same time. The wringer will never remove as much water as a spinner neither.
@Woodie53

Yes I use liquid pods which were the blue things I put in after my initial rinse. I don’t use powder as it will clog up the machine overtime. Twin tubs are better but this was a bargain that I couldn’t say no to and I love it.
