That first ad would have made me boycott Mercury, what were they thinking? Half of those savages never even stood that close to a car before, nevermind driving one.

correct. Starting in `61, Mercury shared the same body with Fords, and dropped the Park Lane, Montclair models.

From 1957 to 1960, Mercury shared its body only with the 1958 Edsel Corsair and Citation models. When the Edsel failed in the marketplace, Mercury continued with its distinctive body through 1960. But Ford decided to return the Mercury to the Ford platform, which it had shared off-and-on from the marque's beginning in 1939, From 1961 to the very end, almost every Mercury produced was based on a comparable Ford platform (Edsel, then Mercury Comet was based on the Falcon, Meteor on the Fairlane, Cougar on the Mustang, and so on.)
