6 Feet 2 Inches Ustad Amir Khan would alone dominate the stage. He only needed an over qualified Tabla player to provide him a constant Theka. Khansaheb was usually very selective about his Raagas. Raag Darbari, Multani, Abhogi, Todi, Puriya, were some of the raagas he frequently sang because they used to perfectly fit into his Long Elaborate festooned Taal Cycle. The Khansaheb's choice of Tarana as an alternative to drut bandish is very notable. He had Tarana in almost all ragas he sang. His deep understanding of Persian Language and works of Amir Khusro enabled him to decode the meaning of Tarana.
47 years have passed since he passed away. The unfortunate death of Ustad in a car accident leaves the void in Understanding of Classical Music. We missed the research and many unwitnessed Raagas as well as compositions which we could have listened to only if Ustad had 10 more years to live.
The Golden Voice of Khansaheb is preserved in numerous cassettes and Old Vinyl Recordings by his followers. I'm very thankful and indebted to all those people who not only heard him live but captured his voice for the generations ahead.
This about recording from a private concert is a small tribute to the Founder of Indore Gharana from my side. I hope you all like the upload.
