One of the most popular destinations for tourists and day trippers in Burgenland is Rust. The free city known as the city of storks with around 2,000 inhabitants is located on the west bank of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. In 2001 the magnificent old town of Rust was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites together with the Lake Neusiedl region. It is partially shown in our film (an undated flea market find) from the early 1960s.
A view of the Fischerkirche is captured - the oldest and most important building in the city in terms of art history. In it frescoes from 12th century were uncovered. The former Roman Catholic fortified church is located on a hill in the southwest of the old town. It is surrounded by a church yard, formerly a cemetery, and a defensive wall. In the film, some storks rise from their nest on the roofs next to the church. Storks in nests on chimneys are Rust's classic motifs.
Some of the magnificent town houses from the 16th to 19th centuries can be seen - some of them are nowhere near as renovated as today. Remnants of the city wall are also a defining part of the historic city center. After the impressions of the old town, which was then deserted, our film ends with idyllic shots of meadows and vineyards around Rust in the Pannonian wind.
