I have a theory about '60s and '70s TV ads - whenever they would compare two types of a particular product, they would use two women: the "brand X" woman would almost always be a brunette, and the one representing the sponsor would be a blonde. If they were both brunettes or both blondes, the woman speaking for the sponsor would be prettier or sexier. These two commercials bear out my theory.

I wonder how much Folgers this ad moved. I think it would have been just as effective if those wives turned to their husbands with a charming smile and said, 'I think my coffee tastes fine, darling, but if you don't like it try making some your own damn self." Then hubby goes out and buys great tasting Folger's crystals. Oh, wait...wasn't it against FCC rules to use 'damn' in primetime? Must be why they aired this commercial instead ;)
