Probably one of the colest dash/instrument clusters ever....a buddy of mine had one backl in the late 70's....he cut the top section from his steering wheel to give it that "airplane" look...that lasted a couple of days until a cop noticed and he was ticketed to profide proof that he replaced the steering wheel with an intact one. It did look pretty cool for a while though.

MoPar used this on the '66-'67 Chargers as well. My uncle's '67 Charger's gauges don't illuminate unfortunately so I haven't seen one work IRL lol.

I repaired the needles on mine by replacing the conductive thread between the terminal rivet and the coating at the base of the indicator needle, sadly I do not have a photo of the fully illuminated cluster it is very cool to look at.

The best part--noticing that there are four actual gauges within that Speedo setup!...Many cars back then were switching to "idiot" lights...that would come on AFTER the problem had developed. Chrysler had many good ideas, back then...too bad those bodies rusted out so quickly!

I was just 6 years old in 1961. At that time, my family all drove Chryslers. I had one uncle who had a 1961 Newport. It was white with ice blue vinyl interior. Another uncle had a 62 300. It was carmal colored with matching vinyl interior. Both of those Chryslers had the Astrodome with Panelesent lighting. As I said, I was just a little kid but I was mesmerized by the aqua blue illumination of the dash. I couldn't wait to ride in them at night. That eerie aqua blue seemed to glow in the dark, which it actually was doing. I was amazed by the way it glowed. I guess it was very expensive to manufacture and service, but it was gorgeous. In 1963, it was over. Chrysler moved to a dull green. It was nice, but it could not compare. The Ford Motor Company started using that same aqua blue color for their instruments, although Ford used conventional light bulbs with blue caps over them. That worked well, and Ford used that color until 1998, when they switched to a very vivid green. In the late 60s, Chrysler came up with a very cool solution. Chrysler used regular light bulbs also with blue caps over them. The very cool and great idea was Chrysler lit the dash from above the dash in floodlights that shined down on the entire dash. It was a beautiful color, and it lit everything on the dash in a very complete way. It actually lit up the entire front seat in that very cool blue. For me, the color of the dash lights is very important to me, and nothing ever even came close to Chrysler's Panelesent lighting. In today's cars, a lot of them use a neon white color, with other colors mixed in. There are some, like BMW use an orange/red color. It's said that the orange color is the easiest on the eyes, but not for me. My favorite is the aqua blue. The dash lighting is very important to me, probably too important to me. But that's just me. Even when Ford and Chrysler used nice colors, and I like that. Up until the mid-90s, GM used white lights. It was really boring and it was really hard on my eyes. My 2008 Explorer uses a very vivid green color. It's OK. Chrysler used that vivid green back in the late 50s. My grandfather had a 58 Plymouth Belvedere, it had that green lighting. After all these years, Chrysler's Panelesent still holds the first place in my book.

My '63 Imperial LeBaron had that lighting and I never got working again as nobody knew anything about it in Denver, Co. Stewart Warner was the supplier but even after I contacted them, they replied they had no one or anything to help with it. Damn shame as for a short while after I bought the car it did work. Was better than bulb illuminated for sure.

What do you mean electoluminescent? Looks like ordinary backlighting by a light bulb.

There is an OSCILLATOR in the system, so it can't be ordinary.

EL lighting is a thin flat film which fluoresces when high voltage ac power is applied, surprised to see it used way back then in a car

@@clivevreeswijk4555 Yes and God forbid you touch the film on the wires or else there went your lighting. Ask me how I know LOL. The "oscillator" used vacuum tubes in it too.
