This 1963 Impala has 13k miles with all original paint, chrome, interior, etc... We removed the original long block and transmission. Another complete long block was built to the current Pure Stock Muscle Car drag race rules. The transmission is Muncie close ratio with a Centerforce II clutch which usually lasts about 200 passes. The best run has been a 12.82 @ 112 at Raceway Park, New Jersey.

Damn, pops really handles that shifter. 111 mph is bad ass. That's high 11 second territory with some sticky mickeys. With that 4.56 gear and some slicks, that car would definitely yank the wheels off the ground. Best 409 video Ive seen.

That factory linkage was very flimsy, especially on my '62. I am in awe of the shifting here. Sitting in this back seat brought a bit of a tear to my eye. Yep.

Mr. Lombardo, you are poetry in motion! Especially when that 409 is winding down at top end. I get the chills just talking about it. You've never failed me in bringing back my own memories of me going through the gear of my Muncie in my 65 Chevelle back in the day in West Babylon N.Y. Thanks for the ride! Back in the day, I had a '63 409/425 with headers, Caldwell cheater slicks, and 4.88s. I pulled the 409 tags off and tried to sleeper it on Van Nuys Blvd. Didn't take long to get called out. With the X frame and all that torque the frame would flex a bit. Nothing like getting squirrley as the wheels came up and the fenders would twist as the hood stayed level. Good times!

Street tires and closed exhaust folks........amazing. .I would like to know what rpm he is shifting at and what rpm he goes through the lights at.. The beast is pulling so hard as it closes on the timing lights that I think he could possibly run 4.88 gears (a bit of a drag on the street) in it and chop another 2/10's off that et. I also noticed he does'n't get fully on it until halfway through 1st gear......understandable of course with the street tires. Back in Chicago where I lived in 1963 his time here would have put everyone on their trailers; 426 stage lll ramchargers, 427 Fords, and every 409 I was aware of including my own 1962 SS 409, 409 hp ,and my buddy's new 1963 409 425 hp with 4.56's. Nobody will believe this but at the drags he shifted his at 7,000 rpm and ran 13. 30's at 105 mph with stock exhaust and plumbers pipe with screw on caps for open exhaust at the strip. Those were the days.

I think the only Chevy's that had factory Hurst levers were '68-'72 Camaro's. +jim davis That's awesome. I'm not I'd quite remember that particular car. I know that a lot of the famous 409 powered Chevys that were famous at the strips were '62s. Right now I don't remember seeing whether or not there were any '63s that weren't Z-11s as opposed to 409s w/ dual quads and maybe their motors bored over to a few extra cubes but still short of 427. I'm not sure I've seen the particular car you're mentioning. In '63 them 427 Ford Galaxies weren't getting into the 11s even with their special light weight fiberglass hoods & fenders & what not (best of 12 flat). Anyway, thanks for clearing some of this stuff up for me. I wasn't around yet when these cars were brand new. I didn't get into this world until Nov. '71. But I've become much of a Chevrolet fan since High School. Once that happened, I never went back.

As growing during the 50s and 60s and liking Impalas a lot I still can't quite figure how the A body GTOs and Chevelles seized the title of 'Muscle Cars'. Oh I know the A bodies are a little lighter and smaller but these cars, Catalinas, 409s etc. will forever remain as true muscle cars. Calling them A bodies was just a marketting gimmick. I also think back on the 3 two barrell 348 4 speeds-they were well respected muscle from 1958 through 1960.
