I built a 331 for my 65 2+2 and love it. It has Twisted Wedge 170 heads, a Howards cam, Blue Thunder dual quad intake with a pair of Quick Fuel Slayer carbs on it, with many other internal upgrades. The transmission is a close-ratio Toploader out of a 65 K-code Mustang with a 3.55 TractionLok in the rear axle. When I punch it to pass someone on road, it gets a little scary feeling the rear end wanting to come around to the front. Lots of fun to drive with manual steering and manual brakes. :) That extra torque is nice to have.

Video is a year old. do you still like the motor ?? Would you change anything ?? How is it from idle to 2000 rpm ?? Thinking of doing same motor on 68 fairlane fastback, c4,8 inch. My. Cars a bit heavier.

I can’t believe it’s been a whole year. Honestly, I haven’t actually driven it very much, since the brakes are sketchy. The only thing that I might change is going to a bigger cam. I thought the idle would be choppier but it’s pretty smooth. I can smoothly pull away from 1500 rpm and the throttle response is immediate. So that’s a good thing. Deciding on the cam was the second hardest choice, the first being which stroker kit and pistons. The car’s up on stands right now with the front suspension half off. Arning drop, new suspension, and better brakes are in the works. I like to work slow and savor the moment, less mistakes that way.

Sounding good. What exhaust system do you have? My 65 fastback has a 347 with all Magnaflow 2.5" full exhaust. I don't like the way it sounds.

Paul, look into Heimholtz resonators. There are videos that describe how to tune the sound of your exhaust.

I honestly don’t know much about the exhaust; it’s what came with the car. The full-length headers are only inch and 5/8 and I couldn’t find any markings on them. The rest is 2.5” with some unbranded mufflers.

thanks for the driving vid 🙂 What piston to head clearence do you have +10cc ? Is you're deck height original height ? How much compression did you have ? I forgot. I'm thinking maybe 1 +6cc for more compression can you cruise it arond 100 to 2000 rpm without problems ? i'm debating between the 284 and a litlle bigger cam for more sound but it has to be drivable at 2000-2500 rpm cruising. what gears do you have?
@JohnLatrobe

The KB355 piston has a +10cc D-shaped dish and should give me a 9.8:1 static compression ratio with the ProMAXX head. I wanted to keep it below 10:1 so I could run the local ethanol-free 89 octane pump gas. Too many problems in the past running ethanol through carbs. I never measured the deck height, I guess I got lucky. I have a 3.73 rear gear with a 225/60R15 tire. The engine turns 3K at 60mph in 4th. In the unedited version of the video I cruise through my neighborhood at 25mph, 1250rpm in 4th. I added a link to the full video in the description. kzitem.info/news/bejne/xZl93IyvfWiYiGk It idles at 800 and pulls smoothly from 1200rpm. It’s a very streetable cam with my setup.

@@JohnLatrobe In my country the ethanol free gas is the more expensive gas Ron 98. Like you're 93 in America so I gonna use that type of gas to keep the ethanol shit out if my engine.

@@chevroletbelair1 If I could get 93 oct then I definitely would have chosen the +6cc piston. If I remember correctly that would give me 10.5:1.

@@JohnLatrobe But is it 10.5 with a 0 deck height or with the original deck height
@JohnLatrobe

@@chevroletbelair1 I’m pretty sure the listed compression ratios are with stock deck height. There are calculators online where you can plug in the numbers. When you mentioned deck height before I assumed you meant the distance from the crank centerline to the top of the cylinder, which I didn’t measure. But I think you mean the clearance between the top of the piston and the top of the cylinder, which I measured to be 0.010”. I wasn’t concerned about not having zero deck clearance since I could always use a thinner head gasket.

I haven’t had it on a dyno but the similarly built Blueprint Engines 331 puts out 375 hp and 390 torque.
