The best thing to do for a motor that has been sitting that long is take each plug out and squirt a little oil in and then take the coil wire off and turn it over for a few times then pull the plugs clean them and put some 2 cycle gas down the carb it will avoid a dry start on the cylinder walls, do not use eather it will clean all the oil off the cylinder walls and could lock it up, the oil will also give the piston rings to the cylinder a better seal for better vacume to suck fuel in better.

Judging from the uneven firing, I'd be willing to bet that one or more of the hydraulic lifters is gummed up. When you opened the hood after it was running, it sounded like there was a cylinder coming back through the carburetor, so an intake valve is likely stuck open .

Man i don't get why people think its ok to run the starter more than 10 seconds straight! That also hurts the battery more then anything. the battery heats up and burs up the cells. i seen it happen on desiels in the winter and cars that had hard time starting.

I love ❤️ Cougar XR7’s, I had 1974, totally fully load silver addition, it was beautiful and magical ... I miss that car, it had a 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8, I towed a trailer, and that car handled the load perfectly, I added swaying-stabilizing-gear-hookups, and would go down an empty freeway at 80 miles an hour, with the A/C on full-blast, Stereo Radio/ 8 track tape playing ... Wow, what a smooth riding car, it took the bumps so smoothly and the suspension was the best ... I was a young, 21, year old, and this car had class, so many people always gave me a thumbs-up and fell in-love with the car, it was my baby ... I really wanted the 1968 Cougar XR7, with all the options, like A/C, Stereo/cassette, full-length console, power windows, Brakes, Steering, Dual-Front-Seats, cruise control, upgraded 6 speakers, tilt-steering wheel, fully leather seats and interior, 390 cu in engine, automatic transmission, Emerald-Green exterior with black-vinyl-roof, with sun/moon roof, black-leather-Interior-through out, spoke-wire-hubcaps, and 4-barrel carburetor, dual-power-mirriors, etc., the car would have cost over $8,000.00, But, things did not work out at that time, I had to wait, and the Brand-New 1974 Silver-Edition, exterior was totally silver with silver vinyl roof, and cranberry-red interior, It was the best!!!
