@wmden1

I know this reply is 12 years late, but imagine if blocked shots had been officially counted. He would have had a significant quadruple double. By significant I mean, considerably more than 10 of each item, except assists. And some people say he didn't perform as well as he should have, during the playoffs. Which that is a crock. What happened here was; he had several team mates that could put the ball through the hoop, and play some defense, like Russel had for several more years than Chamberlain did. In my book, no other valid candidate for the greatest of all time averaged over 20 rebounds, and probably, unofficially, 15 to 20 blocked shots, not to mention altered shots, that were missed because of him, for his career. Those 2 stats mean he probably cut each opposing team's total score by at least 20, and possibly, 30 points. Need I mention that he averaged over 30 ppg , for his career? Nobody thinks about, or comments about stuff like that. Boston had to work their butts off to beat every team he was on, and, almost always by just a few points, solely because of Wilt Chamberlain.
@ddenuci
4 жыл бұрын
@@wmden1 I agree with your point that Wilt would rank higher in many people's minds if additional stats had been kept. I know the great Philly statistician Harvey Pollack kept count unofficially and he did say there were games where Wilt blocked 20 shots. While I don't think he averaged 15+ for his career, I'm sure there were many games where he blocked 10+. As a Wilt fan, I'm disappointed that the Sixers didn't win the championship the three years where they had the best record in the league. In 1965-66, 66-67 and 67-68, the Sixers finished first in the East and the Celtics second. So clearly the Sixers were the better team. Yet they managed to win only one of those series against the Celtics. It's definitely true that the Celtics had the better team early in Wilt's career when he played for the Warriors, but it's alot more difficult to make that claim in the second half of Wilt's career. If Wilt had won all three years with the Sixers, then he would have four total championships and there would be no valid argument that he wasn't the greatest of all time.
@wmden1
3 жыл бұрын
@@ddenuci I wouldn't argue about his career average number of blocks. As long as it was around 10 per game, it wouldn't change my thinking. I am reasonably certain that he or Russel would have the best of all time averages for blocks though, if stats had been kept.
@ddenuci
3 жыл бұрын
@@wmden1 There are articles that claim there is new archives / film that shows blocked data stat for Wilt in 112 games. What's not clear from the articles I've seen is whether this includes just regular season games; I suspect it also includes playoff games. And it's also not clear when these games occurred. If the majority where toward the end of Wilt's career, then the number would most likely be underestimated. For those 112 games, he averaged 8.8 bpg. So, there is little doubt that Wilt would hold numerous records in blocked shots category (blocks in a game, blocks in a season, career blocks, etc), and that it would also add to his triple double count.

I grew up in Phila., and saw many of the 76ers- Celtics games in the 60s in person. Norman Chamberlain was the strongest player ever in the NBA and the most talented center. Russell was the best defensive center ever and the best team player ever. The games where Norman (Wilt) went up against Russell were the most exciting sports events I ever saw. Chamberlain would dominate today- big tiome, and Russell would be great also. Walker, Jackson, Chamberlain and Cunningham were the best front court ever, even better than Boston of the 80s wiht Bird, McHale, Parish and Maxwell. But Russell used to break my heart. He used to front Wilt; that was the only effective way to play him. The Celtics over the years had a better team than either the Warriors or the 76ers, althouhg the 76ers 66-67 team was much better, and the 2nd best team ever, next to the 95-96 Bulls. Luke Jackson was the 1960s version of Darryl Dawkins; he looked and played ferocious and broke some backboards also- at least one anyway that I saw on TV.

Bill Russell would be the dominant figure/force, and MVP, in winning in ANY ERA. He had the quickest reactions on defense, blocking shots, and in rebounding. So many of his blocks were blocked toward his team's players. He always scored when needed. He could run the court and score at full speed. And he intimidated EVERY offensive player, including Wilt, Oscar, Elgin, and the quickest guards/forwards in the NBA. Yes, he was not a great dribbler -- yet, he often dribbled the court end-to-end and scored. His skills improved considerably as he matured in the middle and late 1960's. So, in 1962 he is not yet near his peak.

realized that Chamberlain's knee-joint capsules had become inflamed. Lorber instructed Chamberlain to spend the entire day receiving heat treatment on his knees. He thought that if Chamberlain remained inactive, and received heat treatement that day and the next, the inflammation might subside enough for him to at least start on Sunday. Chamberlain spent several hours each day with his knees under an infrared heat lamp,

I consider the 72 Lakers a greater team than 87 because of how much they did with what little they had. Other greater teams I say are the 71 Bucks, 86 Celtics, 96 Bulls, and even the 75 Colonels from the ABA (the trio of Gilmore, Issel, and Dampier could stifle any NBA team).

pc: I checked the NBA rules and I don't see a definitive statement about this. In the section called "Thrower-in", the NBA rule states the thrower-in shall not "leave the designated throw-in spot". But I have been unable to find any further description of what is meant by "designated throw in spot". It does sound like you are correct, and if that's the case I must admit I embarrassed to say after all these years of watching games, I didn't know the rule.

Boy, Hal Greer. He's the one who inbounded the ball that resulted in the famous "Havlicek stole the ball" call. And then he fails to inbound the ball with the score 103-100. By the way, he traveled long before the 5second call. You're not allowed to shuffle your feet when inbounding the ball (unless it is after a score). Wonder if the 76ers had a time out that they could have used.

The ABA was always inferior to the NBA overall when it came to defense, but it didn't account for all. Keep in mind there were SEVEN players from that Colonels team (Gilmore, Issel, Dampier, Jones, Averitt, McClain, and Roberts) who are in the top 250 all-time NBA/ABA players for highest career defensive rating. It was because of great team defense led by defensive-minded coach Hubie Brown which puts them among the greatest from either league.

Comparing eras is really stupid. These were the best basketball players in the world in 1967. The NBA has the best players in the world now. Just ask yourself this do you think that you would be better than your father, uncles, or other ancestors in everything that you both can do at the same age. The only sport that a comparison of better athletes between eras would be more apt is the pre integrated MLB. Before integration of baseball all the best players in the world did not play in the MLB like they do now. So saying that the players of today would outplay player of Ruth's era, I would say of course since 30 percent of the best players of that era were not allowed to compete. But in 1967, who was better than Chamberlain, Russell and the rest of the players on the court in this game. Some " playground" legends maybe.

There was a TV show that had modern sprinters and swimmers try to beat Mark Spits' and Jessie Owen's records in the same f pool and track and with the same equipment. In short, they couldn't. The track star ran the 100 meters in 11.4 and he normally runs it in 10.0. Except where steroids are vital, there haven't been any major improvements in my lifetime. On the other hand, Baylor, West and Robertson would have started on either of these teams.

Your obviously young and don't understand the significance of what a who Wilt was. If he was a high school recruit like he was at Kansas today. Colleges would fighting to get him. He was almost 7'3 (today's measurements) Shaq was 6'11. You will never see a guy that giant, strong, fast ever again. A 7'3 guy in the NBA is rare anyway, but they are goofy uncoordinated, Wilt played like a guy 6'7. I can just see modern big men winning track medals at over 7'2. He led the league in rebounds at 36 years old.
