You've done one helluva job with your project, that dash came out spectacular. I'm getting ready (Now that I retired), to start the MAJOR overhaul on my 1970 SS El Camino that I've had since 1978. This will be the 3rd time I've gone through her. Just thinking of where to start.

Looks great in the end but if you have any future build like this check out spray way customs he uses fleece alot he uses what he calls rondo its a mix of resin and bondo that you can brush on and is self leveling his page has a ton of excellent videos
@TheDeanjenkins
Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I did watch his videos and they are great. Thought about his "rondo" but since it is self leveling it was too thin for my use, since my surface had lots of vertical sections and I didn't want it to run. Hope that makes sense.

I bought the dashboard cap replacement for my 79 El Camino. I just don't like that cheap plastic look & feel of it. I actually thought of spraying a rubberized undercoat on the dash replacement cap. I've used a nice thin textured rubberized coating on my Miata firewall with nice results & textured look. But I don't know if spraying the dash cap for my El Camino would be a wise thing to do since Southern California tends to have a very hot climate. My concern in that the heat will eventually lift the rubberized coating. I guess try it & find out for myself.
@TheDeanjenkins

Yeah, I don't think I would use the rubberized coating.

Nice! I want to do the same to my '68 Chevelle. See it kzitem.info/news/bejne/qIdpx6eofZVla4I Two questions, would you make that dash commercially? I see you have the LS3 engine, did you brace your frame to handle more horsepower?
@TheDeanjenkins
2 жыл бұрын
No plans to make any more of them at this time. It was unique to what I wanted; Dakota Digital VHX gauges, Sony 2-DIN stereo head, VintageAir upgraded controller and adding AC vents. Did not brace the frame. El Camino frame is already boxed from the factory. I did put QA1 Level II suspension kit in, which includes adjustable braces for the lower control arms to the frame cross piece. At 500 HP/490 Torque, don't think I need any more done to the frame. Not racing it, just a street cruiser.

Nice work, but I would never butcher anything on a classic especially a 68 chevelle
@TheDeanjenkins
Жыл бұрын
Well, did I do nice work, or did I "butcher" it? Just kidding. Good news is if some future owner wants to un-butcher it, the dash pod can just be replaced with a stock one. I didn't feel like the classic car Gods would be too offended given the car was a base model, 6-cylinder, powerglide car.

all the work you did to get smooth, and now you are going to screw it up, you must really like to do useless work, i know it will look good , but REALLY
@TheDeanjenkins
Жыл бұрын
Well, one man's "screwed up" surface is the the way another man wants it to be. I was never looking for a flat painted look, always envisioned a texture of some kind. But, it had to be flat and true before texture and I'm happy with all of it.
