Nick, I share your love for carbs and points. I may be 20 years your junior but the local 'Vette club call me the last carb and point man for many miles. I am proud to help them! With that out of the way, I will give you and whomever reads this a cast iron manifold tech tip, I kept it secret for 30+ years. I bought a die grinder from one of those traveling carivan tool shows that had 20,000 RPM head speed and a 3/8 drill type chuck. It was dearly needed for my teenage racing mower project. I used various lengths of 3/8" thick walled tubing, split it with a hacksaw for the width of the emery cloth, and used it in intake and exhaust tracks to smooth them out. Factory stock class, at that time, required cast iron manifolds both top and bottom. I would use my 'flapper' to burnish the castings and was paid well. Since I no longer race, one of the black arts are out. The valve job and porting is still my personal art and is quite simple and would be considered weird. Take care from Oklahoma Mike and Vee

Mike, had a customer about 30 years ago. Corvette, 4 speed. Could NOT get it to shift without hanging up, Looked under, Hurst Competition Plus. Grabbed a Craftsman #2 Phillips, about 4 inches long, climbed under. 15 minutes later, shifting just fine. But then, my '70 roadrunner had the same design shifter. Your "porting" trick, a few decades ago, I remember reading a story, (I "think" it was Smokey) found a trash pump (pumps anything, even sand) Hooked it up to the intake and exhaust manifolds, one runner at a time. and let it run. This was NASCAR, and they didn't allow porting. This method left some slight appearances of roughness, but REALLY flowed better. Looked like someone just got a GOOD casting. steve
@jeffstevens664

I race a nascar super late model. we can't port anything . so we use acid. fill the runners and let sit for hour each time leaves all the casting looking like just out of mold but bigger.

Like almost all Chrysler products in the 1960's and 1970's the carburetors needed a lot of adjusting to keep them running especially in cold weather plus the spark plugs didn't last too long. I had several some slant 6 and some LA 318 and all had issues. They were durable motors which lasted a long time as long as you remembered to change the oil often enough.

Cool van! At the time those were in very high demand in the US and most came with V8/automatics. That this has the 6 and manual, it was probably sold as a fleet van. Then again, being as it looks like it was a Canadian market sale it may have been a more common setup. Our Chevy van was from the same time period, had a small V8 but with 3 on the tree.Was fun, but my god the smell from the vinyl and carpeting was eye watering. It had also been a fleet van from Superior coffee service.

V8s are hard to beat, however, a well-running I6 is always oh so sweet. I6s are my favourite engines. They have gobs of low down torque and are not too bad on fuel. I've dusted off a few V8s between stop lights in the day with I6s. Those big V8 lumps couldn't spool up as quickly. The slant I6s had lots of power and were easy to find in great condition. They ran out of breath at the higher revs but, with the right intake and exhaust headers plus hotter carbs, could be made to turn very well. That was my route. I couldn't afford V8s. The Super Bee 440 cid. may have a crack along the inner part of the block casting. I've seen that before, albeit, mainly on the small block MOPARs. I hope that is not the case here. Thank you, Nick and crew.

We removed the tired 383 and replaced it with a 77 400 block, with 440 .60 over pistons, a 383 steel crank, and a pair of Holley 390's on a tunnel ram intake. The wagon had a 489 center section with 4:30 ring and pinion, headers with 3 inch exhaust, the best time it ran was a 13.88@101mph but I bet if you put it on your dyno you could have tweaked more horsepower out of it. I think it worked out to 412 cubic inches but that was one of if not that baddest boy engines I ever owned! Would have probably ran high 10's in a Duster/Dart body!

Wow! A slant 6!!! My sister had a 67 signet/valiant with a smokey slant 6 that got rebuilt. It had over 200,000 miles on it. It still runs to this day. Way cool. I put a question to you Nick, Do roller rockers benefit from hydraulic roller lifters? A friend of mine says no. It's a waste of time and money. I say taking out any of the friction in the cam/lifter/pushrod/rocker/valve system has to be helpful. No it's not a super duper secret speed trick. It just makes things easier in the valve train. When things are slapping around at 6000 rpm, it can't hurt to be sure. I see hemi's and wedges also take roost in your shop. Where is that hemi going? Back down under? Lucky car owner that had you set things right. The way you make the videos is really good. I does my heart good to see our ways have not been passed on the road side. The way of the muscle car will never die! Tommy
@nickpanaritis4122
6 жыл бұрын
Tom Miano. I agree with your friend. Friction on a roller rocker versus non roller rocker is very small, that is if the ratio is 100% the same. Many factory non roller rockers for example, state 1.5 ratio, which in reality are less then 1.5 ratio. When installing after market rockers that state 1.5 ratio, is really 1.5 ratio. This is where you gain some HP. Do not forget, higher ratio equals more HP, if the cam has a small lift and the engine demands more lift. this is the way to go.

Nothing says 70's like painting your brake drums with fluorescent green, orange whatever made it stand out. The Chrysler slant 6 that was the undisputed workhorse powerful and durable. The vans of that era seemed more at home as custom self contained camper vans, Love machines, weekend getaways to the big Rock concerts, you name it, it could take what you threw at it and beg for more. Geez, Mr Nick, you're hogging all of the Hemi's up there! Then you go and prepare to let one go down under. I'm seeing a trend when you include the V-8 Interceptor replica. I'm thinking that if you ever get caught up, or close enough to let Vassilli cover for you. I'm thinking, that you and the Misses need to take a trip down under just to recheck the timing and the valves on the Aussie hemi and take in some sights including a V-8 Supercar race. The perfect working getaway. More getaway, less work.

The red Mustang GT convertible with white top has a girlfriend, the red VW Cabrio with white top. Now they are two very different cars! Nick: When you teardown the seized Hemi will you show how the repair is done & any machine shop work needed?

MP G. Most of the work is done during the week. My Camera buddy is at my shop only on Saturdays to film. I am working on something to film on my own soon. I would like to film start to finish on an engine one day, to put on KZitem for all you viewers.

Dodge Van has wrong door emblem..Tradesman was the cargo van,Sportsman was the window van(like a minivan windows all around)..StreetVan was a Tradesman but customized from the factory,not a all window van.. I have seen a few standard trans Dodge Vans.. My Dad had a 74 then a 77 ,79 and 82 Dodge Customized vans..He bought 1 Street van but the others were Maxivans he Customized...the 82 and 79 were 360 4bbl had some kick to it,no lean burn etc and would actually move..The 77 had a 440 4bbl,he changed the cam and head,intake/carb when it was 6 months old lol,that really moved !! The 74 was a 400 4bbl factory order..Dont worry he still has his 70 440 6bbl Cuda he bought new !!!! He is over 80 and still drives it,sure not like when I was a kid,but he still likes to feel the power a bit and spin the tires..I take him for the going sideways and gear chirping shifts ..He ran high 11's with it in the fall of 1970,he bought it in May 1970..he didnt really do much to the 440 either to make it run,headers,slicks and he monkeyed with the carbs lol..

Hello Nick, thanks for your great videos. I have a question, how is it that when you begin a dyno pull, you push the throttle to wide open but the engine stalls at about 2900 until you push a button on the console, then it revs to full speed? What is holding the engine from revving? Thanks, Jeff from Vancouver, living in Costa Rica.

gastubntruckin. In back of the dyno you have an Absorber filled with water that locks the low RPM at your desired RPM. Like in this case, we had it at 2900. There is a impeller in the Absorber that somehow holds against the engine RPM, I guess.

Gonzo 59. After taking it apart, we found a few spun bearings on the rods and mains.

Nick, You mentioned early on in your video that the 66-67 carbs are harder to tune, versus the later ones that are on your hemi. Can you please explain why and what the difference is?

Mathew Labella., The early Hemi carbs have no curb idle screws. They have this brass air screw in between the air fuel mixture screws, that control the idle speed. I have seen this many times that one day they run well, and another day they have no idle and stalling. Tricky to tune these carbs.

Hello Nick! A while back I asked you about Bob 'Mr. 6 Pack' Karakashian's special camshafts for stock appearing Mopar engines with exhaust manifolds. Just wondering if you spoke with him and if you'll be trying one in the future? Love your videos, thanks!

Ron G. I do remember you mentioning this issue. I am working on a 440 build stock appearing. I did not speak with him yet, but I am interested to see what he has to say. Thanks.
