There were actually three options on that car, Lou! The Torqueflite automatic was almost as expensive as the Hemi! The four speed was standard in the Road Runner and the Super Bee, automatic was optional! Chryslers goal was to build a cheap muscle car to attract the sixteen and seventeen year old kids but serious minded racers bought them up too!

Wow, I had seen this very car in Car Reviews 1987 Muscle Car Nationals. This car had competed against a all Black 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 w/ the 455. This Hemi Road Runner was the winner in the best out of 3 match up. Also was the clear cut overall winner in it's class on that day toying with the competition. The owner had mentioned that the car was a Grand National, but it was a 70' GS Stage 1. Love your videos & this car brings back some good memories. Thank You once again !! ;)

Hey Lou, another great car! Back in the day I'd sit at Frisch's Big Boy on Friday nights and watch the cool cars cruise by. One guy always showed up with one of these and I'd sit there in my '65 Mustang fastback, kicking myself for not having bought one of these Hemis. But, I stuck with Mustang, trading the '65 "Stang for a '70 Mach I. I still wonder what owning one of these might've been like, though. Thanks again! --Jim

Yes the torque flight transmission was optional on the the hemi engine roadrunner, but very few owners opted for the 4 speed manual transmission. I happened to own a 1968 hemi roadrunner with the 4spd trans. I bought it used in 1969 from the Plymouth dealership because the original owner, burned out the clutch twice and was told next time he would have to pay to replace it. You sure learned quickly to shift into neutral at a traffic light, because the clutch was very heavy!

I bought a new 68 Roadrunner after returning from Vietnam. The 4 speed cars were a lot more popular than the Torqueflite; mine was a 4 speed. The factory clutch was not heavy at all. Perhaps after blowing the original, the replacement pressure plate was upgraded for drag racing. I only blew one clutch while drag racing and R&R was a bear because the 4 speed tranny was really heavy.

Gorgeous car but his story may need clarification. In 1987 a black 68 Roadrunner ran against a 1970 GS Stage 1 Buick in Bowling Green KY. The road runner was owned by a man named Brian Thomas and driven by Kent Ritter. The Roadrunner had 4:10 gears and both cars ran drag slicks. The roadrunner ran a 12.71 vs the Buick's 12.85 and then a 12.62 vs the Buick's 12.90 to claim the victory. This was all covered in the October 1987 issue of "Musclecar Review". How did this car get to run a full second faster at mid eleven's with no changes? And what race did I miss in 1997 as a rematch for "ESPN" as the owner claims? I love the car but the story sounds a little "enhanced"?

@@stripervince1, a four speed would have been great! But all that is needed is what makes it quick and go fast! But power front discs would have helped it stop quicker! Taxi cab interior and dog dish hubcaps were a great feature for the Road Runner and the Super Bee! Post two door Coupe was the base body style for them too! They were the cheapest, lightest and most rigid of the body style! Bare bones, bottom of the line muscle cars were the way to go! Especially if you were a sixteen or seventeen year old kid back then! @@stripervince1, my first car was a 1970 GTX when I was 15-16 years old, in 1979-'80, and it was originally a 440 pistol grip four speed without the console or the center seat/armrest, just the buckets and the four speed! By the time that I bought it off of my new neighbor at the time, there was a beat up 383 Road Runner engine in it with the auto on the column, the 440 four speed was swapped into the 1970 Road Runner that was converted into a GTX and topped off with the 3x2 setup! My car was F8 green and a green interior and had a blue steering wheel and column in it! I built the 383 up and raced it as the rest of it was, I won five out of seven races with it until the tranny went, and I sold it to another kid who had a backyard full of MoPar muscle cars! He used to race his 1970 Challenger 340 that he had built up and wanted my 383 for his car but he never put it in! Twenty some years later, he moved back into his mothers house when she died and the city made him clean up the yard, so they all wound up in the junk yard! He even had a B7 blue 1970 Coronet 500 with the factory 383 Magnum and pistol grip four speed with buckets and the console that he used to race too, as well as his mothers 1971 Road Runner with the 383 pistol grip four speed! He had one 'Cuda 383, two other Challengers 340 and 383 and a 1969 Charger R/T 440 all in his back yard, plus my GTX! I ran into him several years later and he told me the story! I remember all of the muscle cars being raced at that time, including one cross ram 1969 Hemi Super Bee, and a 1968 427 Chevy Camaro topped off with a blower and 2x4s, they all vanished a couple of years later!

They added a 10 inch slick thats equal to a modern radial,it ran LOW 12's with a 440 four Barrel ! No, that is the original 1968 deck lid. The first ones had no trim on the trunk lid. I had a 68 with the same deck lid.

had an uncle with a 68 and a good friend with a 68 one trunk lid had sheet metal between tail lights with Plymouth running across it and the friends didnt have the sheet metal trim pkg on the trunk lid. so in 68 they had 2 versions of trunk lid depending on trim pkg. you can see examples on youtube.

Also the 69 had an indentation all the way across it. My friend had a 69 and I had the 68.

Standard hood for a 68 Road Runner. 69 RR hood vents point straight up, 68, out the side.

Hi Richard Johnson, It's not the camera, it's KZitem asking when loading the video, "Would you like to stabilize the video?" DO NOT hit "Yes". This lesson has been learned. Hope you see many more cars on the Channel where that does not happen like with this Hemi, Enjoy! Lou kzitem.info/news/bejne/0a1nz6GHqXx7ho4

Stock Hemi Roadrunner, mid 11's? No way. Low 13's maybe.

Yes 426 hemi's ran mid 11's with slicks.. Remember these came with 205 or 215 / 70 or 75 series 15 inch tires at the best, some had 14's..and they didnt hook. Old magazine tests were done by flooring the car off the line.these didnt hook..No Hemi,No 440,383,340 got traction when floored ! Thus lower recorded times. A magazine then, tested a new low compression 383 2barrel (lower power than a 70,69,68 etc) 383 2bbl,2.94 axle ratio, single exhaust..0-60 mid 6 seconds and 14.6 1/4 mile time ! A magazine back then took a 440 4bbl Cuda and ran 14's with 205 70 14 inch tires spinning down the track ,they added slicks and it ran low 12's.. i bought a low mile rarely used 1968 Charger RT 440 back in 1972 and it ran 12.80's in 1976 I had the widest I could get 275 60 series Pro Trac Bias Ply and the 60 foot it spun ! 440 Magnum,727 and 3.23 gears ! I still own my 68 Charger RT and have a bone stock 1968 Chrysler 300 2 door with the 440 TNT and it sits beside my 2010 300 SRT-8 in a race ! My 68 Charger was rebuilt and can run high 11's as it has head/cam etc now..but the 300 is stock..I also owned a 70 Chrysler with a 383 2bbl dead stock ran 14.9 in the 1/4 with 140,000 miles and 2.76 axle ratio !! Was a parts car for my 70 300 ,440 car ! Remember tracks back then had no chemicals like today,no compounds and slicks then were like a radial tire today.... All old road tests are bogus as they floor the cars off the line and these cars had skinny tires and spun and spun with zero traction basically its like starting a manual car in 3rd gear and record the time ! I lived through it,own and owned many cars brand new and low mileage..

01trmsor... Exactly correct. Raise in the 60s and 70s. Stock tires were terrible. Would break them loose in 4th gear when running through the gets. I hate when people comment and their only experience is what they read in magazines.
