You know, I was just going to say that the nicest thing about Jay's videos is that you don't see all the hateful comments you usually see on KZitem. And then ya had to go and spoil it. Insurance isn't a free ride. You get what you pay for. If you have a clean license, rates are low. I pay $15 a month to insure my M Roadster....
@RobertPlattBell
9 жыл бұрын
cybertree Uh, I've owned about 30 cars in my lifetime, and I never - ever - recall any insurance company even asking what color my car was or charging my more money based on color. I have a 1999 M Roadster. The basic liability is $15 a month. Collision/Comp is another $15 month. Why so cheap? I'm older and have a CLEAN LICENSE. That outweighs what kind of car is its, or even the fact it is red. Those are the determining factors - your age, your gender, and your DRIVING RECORD. What make or model car you have is really secondary - the only factor there is the cost of collision repairs. When I was younger, I paid thousands of dollars a year for insurance. But I was a young jackass who thought the throttle had only two positions - full open and idle. Sorry, but insurance is based on risk, and if you are a risky DRIVER they are going to zing you. What kind of car is secondary. What color is irrelevant. You can't get something for nothing. You want cheap insurance rates, drive more carefully.
@LordSupremeGoat
9 жыл бұрын
***** Little bit of a late reply, but it's not exactly as simple as driving more carefully to have cheaper insurance rates. Insurance companies assume younger males are all terrible drivers. Doesn't matter how safely you actually drive, your insurance premiums will be ridiculous. Although, you are totally correct on everything else. I really feel they should implement some sort of driving test to decide how at risk of crashing your vehicle you are. At this point in time, all the insurance companies I know of are age-ist (we'll pretend that's a real word) and sexist. Of course your driving record matters, but having a clean slate while being a fairly young male doesn't mean a thing to insurance companies. The quotes I've received for some fairly cheap cars have been over $7000/year. I'd be paying more than the entire value of the car in insurance money each year. Insurance companies have become corrupt. Wow, that was a bit of a rant. Probably just needed to get that out of my system. As a final note, the hateful comment was a little unnecessary. Hopefully I didn't say anything in this message that personally offended you, I just felt it necessary to get my point across.

This video raises a good point. I've met more than a few young folks who hop up their Civics with thousands of dollars of add-ons. They wreck the car or it is stolen, and they file a claim and act shocked when all they get is book value for a stock Civic. If you want to insure a modified car, you have to declare it as such - an insure it as such. People expect to pay the stock insurance amount and then get paid for something extra. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch!

Supply and Demand. If your car is popular, more people want it and willing to pay more for it, you will get more for it. But if fewer people want it and/or will not pay as much for it, your price will be down. This is a reason why car makers make such a big deal about "Resale value". Modifying a car affects this, as well. Big wing and spoiler compacts with sell for peanuts because no one wants such a car. A well done Tuner or hot rod or art car, like the half-n-half Camaro, can sell very well.

If anyone is new to collector cars and collector car insurance, listen up. Do NOT go to a big name insurance company like State Farm, Allstate, Progressive, etc. Get collector car insurance like Hagerty or Grundy. You set up an "agreed upon value" where your car is insured for the value you AND the insurance company agree on. If you have to make a claim for (heaven forbid) a total loss, you don't have to play the shell game with big insurance companies where you don't know what they'll give you. If you car is a total loss, the agreed upon value is what you get, and you'll probably pay less for it along the way.

A welcome & poignant program that directly effects me, now. I recently acquired a 1985 Mercury Grand Marquis LS with 8,023 miles. Absolutely perfect in every way. Still smells like a new car. I have State Farm insurance. I have over $3400 in "refreshing" the car: belts, hoses, fluids, shocks, motor mounts, tranny mount, rear main seal, valve cover gaskets, complete fuel system cleaning, including a new electric fuel pump and tank cleaning, EVERYTHING you can (or wouldn't) think of. The car is museum quality. $16,665 MSRP, and I have the original window sticker to prove it. The original Title is included with the provenance. I took it to my State Farm agent for her to take pictures of the car: inside, outside, inside the trunk, and under the hood. She was blown away at the "time capsule effect" this car has. I wanted to insure it for $15K. The cost of the car was $10K, not including shipping from MN to IL to IN. No problem, she said. REPLACEMENT value of $15 K. Fine business. Great agent. A month later, I was informed by State Farm, with their "due diligence" of the value of the car, researching current values of said car, was at $3K. I'm like, WTF ?? Soooo, I call my agent, and she apologizes all over the back 40 that she was wrong about the appraisal. I LOVE State Farm, and would recommend them to all of my friends. HOWEVER, there are UNDERWRITERS involved in the insurance business. I'm not sure where they fall in the insurance "food chain". I guess I'll have to go to Hagerty's to insure the Marquis for what I think it's replacement value is.

That's the idea. The many pay for the few who suffer a loss. You wouldn't know it the way they calculate premiums these days. In the past, rates were based on miles driven, car value and age of driver. If you suffered a loss, fault or not, rates remained the same up to a limit of losses. Today, have a loss, rates go up as if you did something wrong and now must bear the funding for future losses vs. the above. So, lame. Another $800 a year isn't going to help them with your claims record any time in the future.

I shouldn't even have to ask this but to anyone calling insurance companies evil- have you ever been in a situation where you literally NEEDED you're coverage? My brother was diagnosed with cancer at 24 (Ewing's Sarcoma), told right away he had only a 20% chance of surviving (which was probably being generous) and then died less than a year later.. Thankfully during that time though he was able to live in somewhat comfort because of our great health plan.. which btw covered over a MILLION dollars in hospital and medication costs. Without those week-long hospital stays or expensive prescriptions being covered I can't imagine the physical and emotional pain he would've had to endure for the last 10 months of his life. I didn't expect this post to be so long but I just wanted to put into perspective the reason why we pay so much for insurance. If you never use it just think of it like this- you're paying for the feeling of safety that you get knowing you'll be financially stable in an emergency situation. Also if you're someone who thinks that it's just the "top executives" that are the evil ones, I hate to break it to you but literally every other industry is the same way. Nobody owes you ANYthing, socialism unfortunately doesn't work and the people at the top will always be paid exponentially more than the other 99%. Life just isn't fair

one scenario i can think about is if you spent 100k on a car, and theoretically if you sold it, the best price you could get was 50k. So if the car was stolen, the insurance company will only pay out 50k, not the 100k. it would be like they bought the car from you. this is only my guess though. not an insurance professional :)

There could be two values on this given Camaro. One, a "stated amount" which SF would agree to bind a policy for "X" value subject to no depreciation or appreciation. Two, "actual cash value" which would be subject to market values at the time of a loss. It varies with insurance companies as to their settlement amount on say a stolen or total loss claim depending on the market value at the time of the loss. There are also insurance companies who will agree to insure a vehicle for a set amount however, they would also place that amount subject to "market value" at the time of the loss which sort of defeats the extra premium cost of insuring a vehicle for "X" dollars. If they could establish the market value had dropped since they insured it, they would only pay the lower amount at the time of loss if the market had dropped and visa versa if the market increased. It's very important to get all of this claims language clear before insuring a restored or custom vehicle because it's too late to do anything about it at the time of a loss. So many people believe they got a policy that would pay like a life policy if the car was stolen and then find out by the claims rep they only pay "up to" the policy limit. Many of the car clubs are aware of the many "collector car" or "Antique" auto insurance that is available who truly provide no gimmick coverage but it's more expensive.
