It Takes a Thief entered its third season in fall of 1969 with some changes... Malachi Throne, who played the key role of Noah Bain during seasons 1 and 2, would not be in the cast for season 3. That turned out to be a huge loss for the series and the important dynamic between Noah Bain and Al Mundy.
For the third season, the show brought in a new recurring character to the cast, and a new location - Italy. Fred Astaire was brought into the story line as Al's father, master thief Alister Mundy.
It was great to see Astaire and Robert Wagner working together as father- son, and the third season guest stars were outstanding. But the ratings didn't hold and the show was canceled by ABC in the spring of 1970.
The series ran three season, two and a half years in this case, debuting January 9, 1968, and ending March 24, 1970. Always one of our favorite series here at Television Vanguard, with a terrific star, great premise and storyline and awesome theme song (one of the top twenty-five all-time in our book) by Dave Grussin and opening title credits.
Robert Wagner would go on to star in two other successful television series - Switch in the mid-1970s, co-staring Eddie Albert, and the highly successful Aaron Spelling series Hart to Hart, co-starring Stephanie Powers.
We should add that the series is available on DVD format, with a terrific full-series package that is highly enjoyed here at Television Vanguard and is highly recommended to fans. The series may also (we believe) still available on streaming service Hulu, although Hulu has recently undergone changes to their ownership group. Disney/Twentieth Century Fox owns the majority of Hulu, buying out Comcast/NBC-Universal's ownership component. For their streaming service in 2020, NBC-Universal have developed their own streaming service called Peacock.
Enjoy.

PS - Robert Wagner's step daughter, and Natalie Wood's daughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner, has co-produced an HBO documentary (it was previewed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year) on the life of her mother titled: Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind. The HBO special airs this coming Tuesday, May 5, 2020. Please check your HBO scheduling guide from more details. The phrase 'What Remains Behind' pays homage to a line Ms. Wood says in the movie 'Splendor in the Grass.'
The documentary was co-produced by Ms. Gregson-Wagner, Manoah Bowman and Laurent Bourzereau (who also directed the documentary), and includes interviews with both of Ms. Gregson Wagner's fathers, Robert Wagner and Richard Gregson, prior to Mr. Gregson's death. Richard Gregson passed away last August 2019 of Parkinson's disease. Jill St. John is also interviewed in the documentary, as is Robert Redford, who co-starred with Ms. Wood in two feature films.
To coincide with the airing of the HBO special, Natasha Gregson-Wagner also has a new book coming on this Tuesday, May 5, 2020 on the life of her mother. The book is titled "More Than Love: An Intimate Portrait of My Mother, Natalie Wood." The book was co-authored with Manoah Bowman and has been written to be the definitive book on Natalie Wood's life.
We at Television Vanguard look forward to this Tuesday to order the book and see the HBO docu-special to learn more about the life and times of Natalie Wood, truly one of life's and the entertainment industry's remarkable ladies.
Rest in peace Natalie Wood, and know that you are loved.
