I remember for regular games in the 1960's it opened up with a close up of a Wilson "The Duke" football sitting alone on the field. The center would grab and position the ball as the offense and defense came to the line to the snare drum intro. The snap coincided with the whistle and there was a montage of clips of various hits, blocks, and tackles. Best intro ever.

Time to grab the chips, an institutional-sized can of chocolate pudding and a Mountain Dew and prepare for the greatest show in football. I loved that intro. +NYISLANDERSFAN NETWORK CBS had Saturday afternoon NHL games in the late 1950s, and then a few Stanley Cup games in mid-60s. CBS then had a Sunday (mostly) Game of the Week from December 1967 thru the early '70s. They returned for the Islanders' clincher over Philly for the Isles first cup. A one-and off. The whole NHL Network TV tale can be found on Wikipedia somewhere.

+Jay Hofer But from 1967-68 through 1971-71, CBS used some jazzy music for their NHL theme. Although the marching-band percussion at the beginning of this clip was common to all CBS sports telecasts of the era. Once the animated "ticket" was split, the opening and theme music for the particular sport being telecast would be seen and heard. For instance, golf telecasts would feature theme music with strings-and-harps.

+altfactor Agree, and I would love to again hear their hockey and soccer music as well. The '67-68 hockey and soccer music were both very Stan Kenton-esque. Then they switched to "The Eye's Got It" promo theme for the NHL (and later ABA) the rest of the way.

At the time believe it or not NFL teams were still getting more money from the gate than they were from the TV rights to the games. That didn't change(IIRC)until the 1978 TV contract. That's why games were blacked out on Local TV through the 1972 season. Even when the law was passed allowing games to be televised in the home teams market it wasn't a complete blackout lift. That's why they had the 72 hour advance sellout requirement. That way the teams gate would still be protected.

The marching-band percussion music with the close-ups of parts of the CBS Sports "ticket" logo were the same for the openings of all sports telecasts the network aired in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Then, depending on the sport, there would be a sound effect specific to that sport (i.e. a start-of-game whistle for the NFL, a golf ball being hit for a golf tournament, a hockey stick hitting a puck for the NHL, etc.), followed by the theme music for that specific sport. Could a different opening have been broadcast outside of the Midwest? I believe the Standard division of American Oil sold gasoline under that brand name only in the Midwest, with their gasoline being sold as American or Amoco everywhere else.

+Carol Griffith The is the original composition for the CBS NFL telecasts. CBS started using "Confidence" in 1964. In 1970, they still used "Confidence" but in a different arrangement.
