The "Hirth Honker" was the mountain motor of the late sixty's and early seventy's,... every manufacturer wanted them..........

My father raced one of these. BUBBA DESJARDINS... from Espanola Ontario. He welded hockey skate blades under the runners and replaced all the bar cleat bolts with longer ones that were sharpened like today's studs. There were no studs or carbides in those days. Lots of trophies 🏆 in our basement from riding this monster.

when i was a young kid going to Northern Michigan University Skill Center, we built a drag racing motorcycle with this same engine in it, we got a 128 mile per hour pass out of it and the rear tire never stopped spinning, we could not get all the power to the ground, fun project back in the mid 70 s

Yea limited build race sled. I think they made 94 of these. I’m not certain but I do know these were hard to buy back in the day. You had to know someone or have racing credentials to get one. Cat would sell the 440 and under race sleds to about anyone but the big boys they didn’t make as many of and the distributors were fickle as to who got them. Probably a good idea as this engine can push over 80 hp+ and this sled could clock in the ninety mph range. With limited suspension travel you don’t want just any dude riding this. These old big boys require respect.

I’ve also been seeing the comments about how unreliable the early free airs were. Well , you had to know how to tune them and how to ride them. They were high strung race engines not for putt putt use. If a guy wanted to putt putt and also race a bit we’d probably try to sell them a 634 fan Puma instead of something like this.

I had that almost exact sled when it was new. It was a factory mod. You're not from Northern MN are you? I still have one of the megaphones. I raced it in 1970 and '71.

That tripple sounds like it's going to rip your face off.........or your balls which ever comes fuirst if you were to get too cocky and overdrive the vingtage suspention and chassis lmao. I have a 73 panther 340, and a 74 cheeta 440 and I'd love to do somthing like this to one of them to bang the ditches with. Reminds me of our old 775 blizzard, that tripple was mean too for an old ditch banger, chassis couldn't handle it worth a crap though
