And that's from the factory folks! That's music to my ears, as an lover and owner of several GTOs over the years! Back in the 70s they were plentiful are my neck of the woods! Have a few buddies that still have theirs! Oh what I would give to go back for say a month, well maybe 6 months! Nothing like a ram air IV! Buddy of mine bought a 69 Judge RA III back around 1977 from the dealership for $1400! It was a trade in and had 64,000 original miles! She was gold with buckskin interior! Still had the plastic on the seats they were never removed!

@disorderlyconduct97 the Ram air iv engine was the same displacement as the 3 ie, 400 cubes, but had a hotter cam, special high flowing round exhaust head porting, an aluminum intake, a forged steel crank, higher ratio rocker arms, stiffer valve springs, and a few other internal goodies that gave the ram 4 about 50 extra high rpm hp/torque numbers. essentially nothing from the factory in 69-70 in a ABody car could touch the Ram Air iv in the qtr mile. It was a beast!

The original vehicle of Motor Trend did not have any power options at all, however, the vehicle purchased from Al Smith Buick, Raleigh, NC had all available options and still won all class titiles. A lot of people today still can't get it through their heads, 510-ft/lbs/torque @ 2800 rpm is a monster. The 3.64 or 3.90 rear-end gear arrangement made things happen. Also, I might add the BB code Turbo400 helped a lot too. Finally, knowing how to drive your vehicle is #1.

Nice one of the Best sounding GTO'S ever - what the SD-455 Should have got with same compression etc. :)
@Dogboy1960
3 жыл бұрын
Cubic inches will always mute the fender shaking of any cam grind. All else equal (same cam, heads and compression) the smaller displacement V8 will sound more radical than the bigger displacement. Bottom line: a 455 would actually need a little more lift and/or duration than a 400 to get this same sound and fender shaking potential even if the compression was the same as the 400. Best well known example I could give to illustrate? In the 1960s the hot factory cam for SBC was the 375hp 327 Corvette solid lifter cam and it sounded reasonably racy in the original 327. The 302 Z/28 motors got the very same cam and heads. Smaller displacement is less than idea in making ultimate power but for sure the raciest sounding idle by far was found in the trans am series legal sized 302....a size produced though the use of a 327 block bore and a 283 crank stroke. The LT-1 350 that followed on also used the solid lift cam but the profile changed a bit so it's not really and apples to apples comparison but it sounded a little tamer even as it made more power than either the 302 and 327 both. Bottom line? Big engines can sound very racy too but they breath bigger and to get that same sound at idle requires a lot more lift and duration than the smaller V8s do.

@Towball22 Its a slow road but "Jackie" is coming along ok. Once we got it out of the hole it was sitting in and brought it home we discovered the frame was in really bad shape so we started with finding a donor car with a good frame, blasted it and painted it and slowly started builing on that foundation. I am trying to use all old NOS parts (shocks, front end parts, brake hardware etc..) which is expensive and im a guy on a budget so I figure in about another years time.

It's true that the 70 ram iv Armasteel crank was malleable iron, with enhancements, they are not drop cast poured, but are centrifugal spin cast. Armasteel is less prone to cracking and pounding damage from detonation, and is denser in its basic structure.

I know of this for a personal fact of history for the 1970 GS Stage1 from Raleigh, North Carolina first hand. This car and other very fast GS Stage1s were really causing a real stir in drag racing. Remember, with the right combination of engine displacement / vehicle overall weight, transmission (Turbo 400-code BB), rear-end gearing -3.64 and a bruit strength Torque 510-ft/lbs @ 2800 rpm really does make for a real street / track class hell raiser.

The BB Code 400 automatic transmission is specially built for I know 1970 GS 455 Stage1 Buicks. The internal composition ex.valve body, steel plates, friction plates, shift modulation (higher upshift) is upgraded significantly from the standard 400 automatic transmission. I do believe all GM Special High Performance vehicles had a version of the BB transmission from 1968 thru 1972. There is an ID plate on the transmission, opposite side of vacuum mod valve toward the front of the trans.

A lot of vehicles performance was altered, even before 1971 when the compression ratio was lowered from an average of 10.5 to 8.5 in (GM). Also, camshaft lift was lowered. Case in point, during the early run of the 1970 GS Stage1, Compression was rated at 10.5 to 1. However, later during the 1970 production run, the compression was lowered to 10.0 to 1. The manufacturing process, engine cylinder bore was more precise than later models due to production tolerances. Core shift was minimal.

Continued: There is a much stronger direct clutch unit along with a 32 element sprag unit. The 16 element sprag can't support the high torque abuse and most of the time it will be the first to go under heavy torque ( drag slicks), etc. The amount of clutches / plates per 1st, 2nd, direct drive packs is different. The overall upshift / downshift characteristics are different. In other words, the BB is the automatic version of a Borg Warner Super T-10 sort of. It is set up right from GM.

all the companies sent ringers to the press. i remember reading about a gto that ran about a 12.8 on bias ply's for a magazine then about a 12 with slicks. pontiac had sent them a car with the RA V between the frame. not tryin to get into a pissin match. just saying most cars that were tested were "hand picked" so i really dont buy any of the old 1/4 times for an out the factory et. hell pontiac sent cars to royal oak for the stage 1 bobcat package for some tests they all did it back then.

They were one of the most radical camshafts ever put in a production V8. Advertised degrees duration was 308/320 (Intake/Exhaust) and utilized high ratio rocker arms for .516" valve lift. 4.33 rear axle ratio was mandatory with the RA IV. 360hp rating was understated and actually produced around 430HP with 50 less cubic inches displacement than the LS6 454 Chevelle.

this is to all the tin indian heads out there. just thought about this today. do you think that pontiac "shot them self in the foot" by marketing the RA IV at 370hp when the RA III was 366? the RA IV was a $400 option for 4 more "rated" hp. we all know 370 is very modest for the IV. I know GM didnt want to be seen as supporting street racing but it seems to me that not many would pay $400 back in the day for 4 hp. rightfully so $400 was alot back then.

It was vastly under rated from the factory at 370 hp. This had to do with GM regulations that stated you couldn’t have more than 1hp listed for every 100 pounds of car weight, so 370 was the listed hp as the car was 3600 + pounds. All GM brands adhere to the rule except Chevy, as the were allowed to violate the rule. The Ram Air is was easily 420 or over on the crank hp scale.

All that twist and go-go fury made Motor Trend proclaim that the 455 GS Stage 1 is "the quickest American production car we've ever tested." Though as their quarter mile time of 13.38 is half a second faster than any other mag could muster and their zero to 60 time of 5.5 seconds is essentially unbelievable, MT was probably testing a ringer. Which was a very popular GM ploy at the time
