The "what's inside" videos you've made (like this and the speedometer one, etc.) are awesome. Thanks so much! I know it's not cheap to get the vintage sets and when you cut into the roof on the one tower, I could feel your pain. Nice job! Good lighting, angles, sound, etc.

Thank you. The upcoming elevator rebuild is probably the most interesting part of the Tune-Up Tower.

I know that the Freeway Chase road set from the early 2000's used a spring like that to pop a piece of road up and throw the car off the bridge. The spring in mine broke, and I had no idea where to get another. What do you (Smackeral Café) do if you forget how something goes back together, you didn't take pictures, and the set is so old that no one else has information on its inter-workings?

I agree so long as its made with quality parts. Hotwheels of today just arent the same as they used to be from my experience. I currently have both vintage tracks and newer tracks and the tracks work fine but the boosters are horrible. Compared to boosters from the 70s and 80s boosters in todays world are absoutlely horrible. Safety features cause them to be underpowered and they hardly do well with most cars. I remember being able to launch cars accross the room even without a track. Todays boosters have trouble sending a car through just 2- loops. So as long as its made with the quality things used to be made with im fine. If its made under todays standards itll only last 5-10 years even if you take care of it.

would heating the spring you made until it glowed red and dunked in oil or water help it hold it's shape better?

I'm restoring three of these right now. Your videos really helped! Got them running from being totally dead. Is there a certain width spacing between the arms of the dyno unit? Mine are snug on all three towers.

On my Tune-Up Towers there is a 1/8 inch (3 mm) gap between the 2 needle arms.

Thank you for the reply. I have three of these almost completely restored.(thanks to you) I need the lever and knob that lifts the orange solid track piece on the top level for cars to go down to the track. . Also need one roof and a couple white elevator safety bars for the first floor, and two Dyno-Meter Panels. Then all three will be 100% restored!.

Surely you could have bought a spring like that online?

You're probably right. I could have paid someone in China to make that spring. However, part of the joy of working/playing with Hot Wheels is the hands on experience of doing it yourself.

The flexible spring mount has to have at least one benefit over a fixed mount...
@smackeralcafe

It would have something to do with the rubber roller of the drive shaft keeping proper tension against the plastic belt and roller of the treadmill. There must be some variability in contact that prompted the spring arrangement originally.

+Smackeral Cafe but they only fixed the mount, did they change other pieces?
@smackeralcafe

They only fixed the mount. But if you look closely at the picture you will notice that they left a little bit of wiggle room for the drive shaft to float in. Might be an approximation of what a spring would do.

Hey smack I found a easier way to replace the spring. You can use a safety pin. Bend and use the end with the hole. Cut to length you need.
