I've moved away years ago but I was San Francisco born and raised. Larraburu was the gold standard. I think it was on 7th avenue in the Richmond district. I could get a hot load for 25 cents.

Larraburu was the king of sourdough in the City. Next was Parisian and then Boudin. The Royal bakery was excellent but more in the lighter french style. Also there was the older Roma bread which I never tasted. All glorious bakeries

This is a cool lookback and all , but I always got side-eye-and-smirky-triggered when I moved to the bay area years ago , at people giving me the whole “you have to try the sourdough, You can only get it here” kind of declarations. A bit like someone claiming “you have to try our local honeybee honey…zOMG You can only get it here!” Guess I was bit surprised at how the “cosmopolitan” Bay area could also act …provincial. In retrospect, I guess I’ll switch the tone somewhat to …“charming”?
