I'm not a pinball guy but that definitely looks original to me. The wires going to the side connector were installed at the factory. What is the use of the stepper?

It's a horseshoe game. When you spin the wheel on the front of the machine, each rotation pulses the stepper one time and it advances the horseshoe one "click" on the front glass by illuminating a series of bulbs (the wires coming off the stepper go to the light bulb sockets). Since these wires also go to the plug on the side I am assuming there was some external board that could also display the horseshoe animation? But that seems like a very specific use case for this game... If you Google "Williams Ringer" you won't see another one with this plug (at least I didn't)

It is probably a special version of the game for a showroom
