1971 - The Pentagon Papers are printed in the New York Times on June 13. They outline the US political-military involvement from 1945-1967. The papers expose how the U.S. Government misled about U.S. intentions in Vietnam.

In cinema, Fiddler on the Roof starring Topol is the highest grossing film. Other popular movies were The French Connection, Diamonds are Forever, Brian’s Song, A Clockwork Orange, Carnal Knowledge and Dirty Harry. Best film goes to the French Connection. Also of note is Steven Spielberg’s directorial debut of the made for T.V. movie Duel.
Making their television debut was All in the Family, The Electric Company and The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. Well known animated shows Help! It’s the Hair Bear Bunch, The Funky Phantom and the Jackson Five also make their debut. Also of note, the final cigarette ad appears on January 1 during Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show.
In music, Jim Morrison of The Doors is found dead in a bathtub in Paris on July 3. Tops songs of 1971 include Imagine by John Lennon, My Sweet Lord by George Harrison, Maggie May by Rod Stewart, Rose Garden by Lynn Anderson, and I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing by the New Seekers. This song became popular in the 1971 Coke Commercial know as “Hilltop”.
The Baltimore Colts defeat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 in Super Bowl V at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida. Dallas Cowboys Linebacker Chuck Howley is the MVP. He was first and last player to date to be awarded the honor from a losing team. Howley was also the first non-quarterback to win the award.
Joe Frazier defeats Muhammad Ali at Madison Square Garden, in the first of three epic bouts between the two, to retain the World Heavyweight Championship on March 8.
On the diamond, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Baltimore Orioles making their 3rd straight series appearance in7 to take the World Series Title. Roberto Clemente has a phenomenal series batting .414 with 12 hits two home runs to take MVP honors.
Big years were had by Vida Blue who wins the AL MVP and Cy Young with a 24-8 record, 301 strikeouts and a 1.82 ERA. The A’s win the division in 1971 and are starting to build a dynasty. Fergie Jenkins wins the NL Cy Young with 24 wins and a 2.77 ERA. Joe Torre (yes, he was a pretty darn good player too) was the NL MVP .363 average and 137 RBI. Willie Stargell lead the NL with 48 home runs and knock in 125. The Yankees Bobby Murcer bats .331 with 25 home runs. Bobby Bonds hits .288 with 33 home runs and 102 RBI.
The Baltimore Orioles have a record tying four twenty game winners: Dave McNally (21-5), Mike Cuellar (20-9), Pat Dobson (20-8) and Jim Palmer (20-9).
The Cardinals make an un”Wise” trade by sending Steve Carlton to the Phillies for Rick Wise. Supposedly, the deal was made because Carlton wanted a $10,000 raise. The Mets also get rid of Nolan Ryan to the Angels for Jim Fregosi - ouch!
Reggie Jackson hits a 520 foot homer at the All-Star game that hits one of the light standards on the roof of Tiger Stadium.
