Never quite figured out why Cold Blood didn't leave a larger footprint. One of the tighter Bay Area bands you were ever likely to see and in lead singer Lydia Pense, a rare combination of looks, stage presence and talent. Such are the vissitudes of rock 'n roll. One thing they didn't lack is longevity. They're still around and touring as we speak.

I missed the concert, out of Edmonton working, but fell in love with Cold Blood band on vinyl when I heard them on CKUA radio. I agree with you about the talent in that band, but 70s Edmonton wasn't ready for their mix of soul and horn arrangements, or the tunes the band picked to play weren't the right ones for the crowd. Check out the top 20 hits of 1972 and its quite a mix of styles.

The young lady next to Rose is TINY!!!! She was mighty....you can see her on the Don Kirshners Rock concert footage playing that tambourine and singing her ass off. My only problem with this is as with most Sly & the Family Stone performances...they were not crisp. They were downright sloppy in certain regards. It's a shame. The drummer is playing this ENTIRELY too fast. he took all the funk out of "You're The One" - one of Sly's funkiest recordings ever. They have a real jam band, don't give a sh*t, rehearsal vibe about them in this clip. The performance of "You're The One" on Don Kirsners Rock concert is MUCH tighter.

I was introduced to all their music and movies and they took me to a lot of rock concerts. When you were cutting your hair and dressing clean, i was growing mine and wearing headbands, opened shirts, and tight jeans - trying to be...something...not quite what...i knew i wasn't a hippy because of my mindset but i sort of looked like one. I cut my hair and started wearing suits at jobs beginning in 1980. Then, i started to grow my hair again with the different clothes. I still have long hair now but it's pretty much bald on top. Ok I finally found correct info on the ELI band: Steve "JJ" Lockhart - guitar, vocals; Steve Gunner - guitar, keyboards, vocals; Chris Paulsen - drums; Chris Littleton - bass The band Eli was formed in Redding, California, and moved to the Bay Area in the early part of 1974. From there they hooked up with producer "Jelly Roll" Troy. Playing a version of Southern Rock that had more of a heavy metal leaning than the Allmans or Skynyrd, Eli was able to attract some label interest and caught the ear of promoter Bill Graham, who gave them a few shows, including one in June 1975 at Winterland you can find online, opening for Black Oak Arkansas. Shortly after that show, as it was likely a label deal might come together, they had what guitarist Steve Gunner calls "management troubles," which caused the breakup of the band. Of the members of Eli, only Gunner went on to any recognition. Gunner, in the late-1970s, played in a band with Skynyrd drummer Artemus Pyle, and in 1994 was asked to join the revised CCR, called Creedence Clearwater Revisited, which includes original members Stu Cook and Doug Clifford. Gunner is still recording and touring with CCR today.

I'm glad we figured it out, as they were not even listed on the fest flyer posters, and they were a pretty good band at this time, tho heavily early santana influenced (who I also like). I dont think they recorded any albums, but at least there is their live 75 winterland show up with 7 songs, a bit more original having moved on from this santana style, tho a more general 70s hard rock sound a million bands were doing then, tho I still have to listen to all that.

We came from Saskatchewan that weekend to catch the festival action. As l recall a varied group of solo acts but mostly well known bands of the era. Buddy Miles band/ Spring (from BC.)/ Stallion Thurrock/Ballin' Jack/Tower of Power/ Cold Blood/ Elvin Bishop band/ Joan Baez/ Albert King/ Billy Preston & Sly/ Family Stone. Also 80 piece Indian Summer Orch. (ESO.) There was one act booked who couldn't make it ...l believe it was James Gang. It was ironic that the band who filled in to replace them was Sly & Family Stone. Fun in the sun for 2 days and great tunes and that for $15.00. (somebody said Taj Mahal was there but l don't recall them playing)..... Cheers! who were famous no shows during this time. Never expected to see them but put on dynamite show.

Where was this concert located in Edmonton? Is that Clarke Stadium? I only went to indoor concert venues back in the 1970s.

You can hear the announcer right at the start say it's at Speedway Park. We didn't live in Edmonton at the time so I can't recall exactly where that was.

@@Malcolm-Achtman I've been living here in Edmonton since 1955 so I know where Speedway Park was located. Back in 1972 I saw Uriah Heep at the Kinsmen Field House on March 4 and Deep Purple at the Edmonton Gardens on May 30.

@Malcolm-Achtman

Obesity was far less prevalent in the 1960s - 1970s - similarly at Woodstock in 1969. Most people at the 1972 Edmonton gig were young, but if you look at young audiences attending concerts today you will likely see more obese people in the audience.

@@erikt454 We shot a lot of different bands in the early 1980s, but it was still photography, not video. e.g. Pat Benatar, The Cars, Charlie Daniels Band, Carole Pope, Powder Blues (with video 1980), Burton Cummings, Trooper, Prism, Steppenwolf, Loverboy, Bryan Adams, Doucette, Red Rider, Doobie Brothers, etc.

@@Malcolm-Achtman Thanks for replying..! I ask, because there are a number of Canadian artists who surely played festivals out west, who were rarely documented with audio, let alone video recordings. I'm thinking of Stan Rogers, Willie P Bennett, folks (pun intended) like that...

I guess the horns sound like Chicago but the gal (Lydia Pense) fronting the band Cold Blood reminds me more of Janis Joplin.

Great video. Great music. Fun time I bet. But what a silly, worthless, frivolous and self indulgent generation of kids. The only generation that couldn't just let it go and get on living. The grandparents of the generation that is today going backwards in the name of progress. I was just going into elementary school when this was filmed. And thank goodness for these kids they weren't around and up to this nonsense around high school graduation time. The silliness and their me, me, me only vibe while fronting the "all for one & one for all" charade probably wouldn't have worked out for them too well.
