Just an awesome bike sir, I had a 72 Interstate too, that tank is massive. I later switched mine to the two into one newer Amal and never looked back, also went solid state ignition. Thanks for sharing your beautiful machine.

Norton went up to 850 and lower compression to combat the main bearing stress and subsequent wear, primarily on the primary side. My 850 rattles a bit but remembering these engines are not exactly blue print engines. Valve clearance on this bike are a a little loose but once warmed up clearance should decrease. Norton are an awesome bike and for their age are a very powerful bike and would suprise most at the torque and a exceleration they have..

I always heard the 750's had a little more torque maybe that is why?

Normal valve gear racket for a Commando - had three of them , two still with me. Set correct inlet and exhaust tappet clearance at 6 and 8 thou' respectively and they still sound like that. If I recall the Combat motor required slightly wider clearances at 8 and 10 thou' which might account for this particularly noisy one.

Had one when they first came out, (UK). Worst bike I ever had, the bearings went at 2800 miles, and the camshaft was also found to be faulty, the disc pads went at 400 miles and no parts were available, basically if it COULD fail it did, and after a sad 10 months I did what I always said I wouldn't and got a 750 Honda, as I didn't like the Triumph trident, even though I had loved my Bonnevilles.Such a shame, a great looking bike, and this one is a credit to the owner, despite a few flaws

Now that is a really neat bike, well done! I agree about the detuning and superblend bearings, that knowledge came rather too late after I had bought it, (also for the Norton factory). Never seen that carb conversion before, looks neat though, also the front disc looks better than the standard. A case of "if only Norton had done this".

The carb is a Mikuni. It solves the problem of plugged idle jets and that's usually why people change out the Amals for a Mikuni. If you want performance, put the Amals back on. If you want easy starts, lower performance, a removable idle jet for cleaning and no gasoline all over your bike and fingers, keep the Mikuni on. It really should have 2 though, one for each cylinder.

The left side, primary side main bearing went on my 850. It's a good idea to clean the mesh oil pickup filter in the oil tank once and awhile and I always check for a full pipe from the return oil line in the tank when she's running. If the bike has been sitting for a while all the oil can drain into the crankcase. Another issue with Norton's and probably specific with the Amal carbs with poor float level adjustment or a worn float valve and seat can allow fuel to contaminate the oil which dilutes it with obvious detriment to engine life. Most people who own an older British Bike will always turn off the fuel tap immediately after stopping. Worst case scenario is an explosion in the cylinder after float valve issues. After I stripped my engine the alternator stator and rotor had been touching showing how worn the primary side main bearings were.

No. They used a big rectangular Lucas. I like this style from the Vincents, so I installed it myself.

A single Mikuni is garbage and there is no such thing as a Combat with a single carb. It's not a Combat once you compromise the acceleration and it's torque. You lose the advantage of 10/1 compression, dual 32 manifolds with carbs and the hotter cam. You guys might know Mikunis but don't know Norton Combats.

Sure thing. The Combat had more power. They also had a tendency to blow up. There was a recall. The fix is superblend bearings. Chances are, if you find a Combat that is running, it will have the fix. Great motor & very fast.

I had a 71 roadster days after i passed my test on my Hustler. Never a problem with engine and at 19 i hammered it! Clutches oil up so use auto transmission fluid in chaincase. Never put too much oil in engine because it goes into air filter. Swapped mine for a Trident in 76, smoother but now i'd love to have my roadster- ade753k back
