I saw one on the street in San Francisco in the late 1990’s. This Corvette footage is truly remarkable to document the extent that GM was testing……even in a Corvette! First production availability I believe was 1974 and only in the GM large car platform, Buick Electra, Riviera, Oldsmobile 98 & Toronado, Cadillac DeVille/Fleetwood/Eldorado Coupe. Yes, only the luxury cars from GM. Lasted until 1976 and that was it until Mercedes re-introduced on the S-Class in the early 1980’s.

For GM, airbags (air cushion restraint system, was the marketed name) started as option on 1974 - 1976 large platform sedans only, Buick Electra, Oldsmobile 98 & Toronado, Cadillac’s entire lineup (except convertible). After 1976, the option was discontinued, but that decision was made way before 1976, as the GM large car platform changed for 1977 and airbags were not part of the design. Didn’t show up again until Mercedes re-introduced them in the 1980’s on the S-Class. Don’t know exactly when the design and prototype testing started, but you can watch another KZitem video on the 1973 test fleet of Chevy Impala’s that were equipped with the restraint system and sent out into the public domain for research purposes. I’m sure the other car manufacturers were developing airbags as well, I’ve never seen anything on Chrysler or Ford research or testing of airbags. Obviously, Mercedes was developing them as well, at the same time. Remember, this development started in the late 1960’s.

Not sure what you mean... Safety glass (toughened glass that breaks into small pieces rather than shards) has been commonplace since like the 1930s. hi everyone and periscope film 1973 would be the right year as G.M. did offer air bags as option on some of there G.M. car's I remember a Buick advertisement in a magazine telling about the air bag option being offered on some of the Buick's for 1973 how many got ordered none 0 but from the 50's to the 80's you had to know more about the new car option than the new car dealership they really didn't know much more than regular options the air bag option was offered in 1973 was just like the optional the four on the floor option in the 1957 Chevy not one got ordered with a four on the floor which when first herd about the four on the floor option for 1957 I thought was B.S. but turned out to be true I had friend that in the late 40's though 60's worked in the garage at new Chevrolet dealership he showed me his 1957 Chevy factory shop manual it showed a picture and explained how to adjust the linkage on the optional four speed floor shifter no B.S. one more thing as far as the air bag option for 1973 you have to understand how people we're about even seat belts in the 60's and 70's people didn't want to even wear there seat belt that was the addatude back then with lot's of excuses and wrong ideals G.M. offered seat belt as option in there car's starting 1958 then federal government made seat and shoulder belts law in all new 1968 car's and truck's but there was no law saying you had to wear seat belts until it became law in the 1980's in California anyways one thing i do find interesting when i watch the late 60's early 70's car's being tested the interiors airea doesn't fold up like all most all 2000's car's and truck's do the floor and roof aren't bowed with the doors flying open driver and passenger being crushed by the dash like the 2000's car's and truck's well everyone have good day (i found this all to be smashing) :-D

Crumple zones is what they are called. With carefully controlled destruction, it spreads the forces away from passengers. Today's cars aren't built shitty that way for no reason. The car has long been seen as a throw away, humans not so much. The downside is they are often not able to be repaired.

Air bags were available in 1973, but only on the Tornado. Available on some luxury boats in 1974. To my knowledge, the Corvette was never offered with airbags until 1990. The dealers all worked off of the same order guides. If it wasn't on there, it wasn't available. Yes, there were COPO's and fleet orders, but you weren't going to get an airbag in a Corvette column, and you weren't going to get a Toronado column in a Corvette. No dice. Back then you could get non-standard color combo's, but they sometimes required a written request. As far as the 4 speed in the service manual, not uncommon. The 1970 Monte Carlo had instructions on how to adjust and repair the convertible top. I've never seen a '57 Chevy with a factory four speed, but I've wondered if some Black Widows may have been so equipped late in the model year. Also, dude....PUNCTUATION!

Back then, the airbag was supposed to REPLACE the seatbelt, that’s why u see no shoulder belts, and that’s also why the introduction of airbags as an option was a failure, option was the equivalent of $1,400 in today’s dollars. When airbags were reintroduced, they were introduced as SUPPLEMENTAL to seat belts, so the success was better, then was mandated by law.
@bradparris99

Air bags were supposedly for all the people that didn't wear seat belts. When air bags first were first available, the shoulder belts were deleted and there were only lap belts. Back in the early 70s I always wore the lap and separate shoulder belts when I drove. Even as a teenager, it was a no brainer to buckle up both belts.
@davidhoffman1278
Жыл бұрын
The automobile insurance companies and researchers of automobile users determined that it was better to hopefully get people to use the relatively easy to put on and relatively easy to remove lap belts in conjunction with an ACRS(AIRBAG) TYPE system instead of trying to force the additional usage of the somewhat awkward and difficult to use shoulder belts that were in existence at that time. The theory was that better a lap belt and an airbag than nothing at all would significantly reduce the probability of serious injuries and fatalities.

This stuff has contributed to making modern cars incredibly complex, exceedingly heavy & counteracts attempts to maximize economy. Careful & attentive driving saved more lives than any airbag ever did! And I don't care for anything coming 200 MPH at my face.

I didn't hit tops never hit anything on the steering wheel and I'm 6' My door hinges weren't damaged in that crash have pictures to prove it...
