Gladys was always such a lady wearing elegant gowns and the Pips were true gentlemen wearing nice suits. I love those smooth steps by the Pips as they gently sang while the Queen Gladys Knight belted out soulful sounds in perfect pitch! They're a classy act that I look for in today's music.

My best friend sadly died today. Many years ago I asked him what he wanted to be in his life. He sat there and looked wistfully into the air. After a very long pause he said,.. 'I 'd like to be a pip'. We both laughed even though he was being serious. Today I have laughed and cried many times at all the fun we had together and I play this song and think of the simple beauty of his desire.

James Brown had a big hit called " Hot Pants" a couple years earlier and The Ohio Players had a big hit called 'Skin Tight' a year later both had sexual explicit songs. My point being stop re writing history, not every thing 40 years ago was pure and not everything today is trash.

Stuart Perry that is a strawman. In no way am I implying it ALL was pure or ALL music today is trash. But it is very clear that the status quo back then and now were polar opposites. Hot pants was the exception back then. Today it would be considered timid compared to the average pop now.

Stuart Perry Stuart Perry sure it was controversial during the 50s and 60s. But the thing there were only few acts that crossed the line in the conservative 50s america. Elvis presley, james brown, little richard etc. Elvis shakimg his hips was considered sexual. But it was differnt times then. When you look at the music nowadays, girls shaking their ass, wearing bikinis in like every video it has become the norm now. I do wish this kind of music would be more mainstream but it is not due to music industry being so controled and surveyed. They make people famous now by just looking at surveys and analysis of what preteen girls and boys like. Its really sad. However im not saying there arent any good musicians out there. You just have to go look for it harder.

The song "Midnight Train to Georgia" was inspired by Lee Majors and Farrah Fawcett.[13] Songwriter Jim Weatherly phoned his friend Lee Majors one day, and the call was answered by Fawcett. Weatherly and Fawcett chatted briefly and she told him she was going to visit her mother and was taking "the midnight plane to Houston." Although Majors and Fawcett were both successful by that time, Weatherly used them as "characters"[14] in his song about a failed actress who leaves Los Angeles, and is followed by her boyfriend who cannot live without her.

On this day in 1973 {August 26} "Midnight Train to Georgia" by Gladys Knight & the Pips entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #71; and on October 21st, 1973 it peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} and spent 19 weeks on the Top 100... On October 14th, 1973 it also reached #1 {for 4 weeks} on Billboard's R&B Singles chart... It was the 1st in four straight records by the Atlanta quartet to make the Top 5; after this one came "I've Got to Use My Imagination" {#4}, "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" {#3}, and "On and On" {#5}... Earlier in the year another 'night time in Georgia' record made the Top 100, and on April 1st "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks}...
