What a nice swap, even leaves plenty of room in the engine bay to work. You could've shoehorned a 453 in there but I'm glad you didn't, also can't imagine the added weight would've done any favours for the handling. This is the right Detroit for this truck, no question. Thanks for the video.

100KM/H is not too bad. My parents had a 1977 Landcruiser FJ40 with a six cylinder gas engine and a four speed transmission and Dad briefly had it up to 110 KM to get past some idiot, but it was very unhappy doing it. These vehicles were never meant for speed, but for going through the bush where low end torque was more important.

Very nice! A bit less space than how it fit in my truck (in the profile picture a 59 Chev Apache), but great setup. They are great engines, but like you say, not exactly quiet. I put a second transmission behind to get speeds up for the same reason. probably my most viewed video because they are so cool!
@TestECull

I'd sooner attack the rear end ratio than go with twin transmissions. My 85 F150 came factory with a wide ratio 4-speed and 2.49 rear gears; 75mph is only about 1700RPM and the gearing in it would probably be better suited to a 4-53 Detroit than it is to the 300cid gas I6 it actually has! Good as the 300 is, a 4-53 or 6v53 would out-torque it too, so the thing'd probably accelerate a bit faster too lol. The upper limit of what these old trucks can tow was never their engine anyway. It was the brakes, the steering. I have pulled >7000 pounds with my 85 in the past; clutch was not liking life very much but otherwise it did it. Only rated 5500. With a detroit 2-stroke in the nose I'd be able to pull whatever I wanted to without issue. Still be limited by suspension, tires, brakes. Maybe that's what I'll do with my 95. Detroit 2-stroke swap it. That one has the same 300 I6, but instead of a wide ratio 4spd and 2.49 diff gears, it's got the ZF 5-speed and 3.08s out back.
@lovesloudcars

@@TestECull sounds to me like your 85 has the perfect gear ratios a guy could ask for. This inline 6 300s were a fantastic engine really, though I prefer diesel- old ones anyway.. especially Detroits. The perfect engine swap would probably be something like a Mitsubishi engine I've got in a generator. 6D31-T. 302 cubic inch 117hp @ 1800 rpm with turbo. Quiet and very good on fuel. For me, the sweet spot is enough power and least fuel burned. As for your beginning saying rear end ratios over 2nd transmission. Yes. Except for money & options. I did my Detroit swap in 1991 before internet & had no money, but had donor truck parts.
@TestECull
Жыл бұрын
@@lovesloudcars Mmhmm. Well that 300 is known as a diesel-with-spark-plugs to many anyway. Has about the same powerband as one of these 53-series 2-strokes, just not the earthshattering raw torque. But ye I think a 2.49 or 2.73 rear end with one of these baby Jimmies and a 4-speed or 5-speed manual would make for a vehicle that's quite comfortable on the interstate. 1700rpm is a pretty comfy spot for one of these Detroit 2-strokes to sit at for cruise when put in a pickup, yanno?

FYI... it is just a positive displacement blower, it creates NO boost. Not a supercharger, it's a blower. Now can you put one on a 4 stroke engine with some modifications to make a it a supercharger? Yes but in native usages it just moves air, doesn't compress it at all. Want a power adder, add a turbo.
