Was it this bike which Peter crashed at Oulton Park when the tank/seat unit came adrift? There was a famous photo of this accident published at the time. This accident put a premature end to his racing career. A brilliant rider & engineer. Sad to hear of his passing on 20th Dec 2020.

Don’t think so, that would have been the 1974 space-frame bike. The shown one here is the 1973 monocoque. I was sitting in the grandstand at Oulton that day.

Not to detract from Peter Williams, who was a bloody good rider and engineer, but this bike was a brilliant assemblage of good ideas rather than a groundbreaking design. The monocoque frame had been done before, notably by Ossa, the suspension was old school and the excellent aerodynamics were due to Peter’s attention to detail rather than anything new. The fact that Peter made what was basically an old clunker- the Norton twin- into a very competitive race bike was the real genius.

Peter was an excellent technical development engineer. He brought together different technologies that hadn’t been widely accepted in bike racing before and mostly they worked well. The idea of a light aerodynamic bike was a touch of genius at the time and most of his stuff had already been tried out on his Matchless some years before joining Norton. The ‘73 bike was the culmination of 6 or 7 years of hard work.

Great video. I posted some footage of 1972 bike (blue one) being started up by Mick Grant with Peter Williams there at NEC a couple of years back ( on my channel "pete7kcu")
