I am going to have my drain plug welded in.My plug leaks .I tried tightening it but it still leaks.I don’t trust any sealants especially when dealing with gasoline. That way I won’t have to worry about it leaking and having to pull the tank out again.I will have the tank boiled out and will have screen filter cleaned that goes behind the plug.So I should not have to deal with the tank for awhile.

Can this be done with the tank still on the car?

No, you need to remove the tank since is at the bottom of the tank and there is no access from underneath.

Actually there is room underneath to take out the drain plug and remove the filter without removing the tank. It is located right where the plug sits while the tank is the bug. Might have to jack up car to get at it. If you take the tank out you can see the hole that's there, right by where the fuel line end is that goes to the carburator. Most likely on these older bugs, the undercarriage is so dirty and whatnot it's very difficult to peep under and see the drain plug. Hope this helps! Keep on trucking!
