That was my first bike too! Except it was old when I got it in '92. Rode it from 8-11 years old until I lost my place to ride. I really wanted it modern yz125 back them but I love vintage bikes now and wish I'd never sold this one! Thanks for featuring it!

I got into it late at 12. But my first bike was a 73 mx80. I welded on the gear shifter and paid a 16 year old to fix it with candy and boom ,I was living it.

I had a 360 Yamaha Enduro, it had a centrifugal advance sleeve on the flywheel , it would advance too far sometimes and backfire when kick starting almost breaking your foot sometimes, It was suppose to have a compression release I guess to prevent that hazard. I guess the springs got weak and it sometimes advanced too far to a few degrees before top dead center ,I got tired of that hazard and welded it on in one position. I thought It was working right after that till I kicked it one instance and it backfired again and it slightly sheared the Key on the flywheel, then when I started it, it would only start backwards. You could not tell until you kicked it in gear and it went backwards. A new flywheel key fixed the problem. It was crazy having a motorcycle acting like it had a reverse gear, 5 of them to be exact.

My 1st bike was a 1980 mx 80 in 1982 or 83 when i was 9ish ,virtually the same bike as that except the graffics, I rode that thing so much n it never broke down, i had a fun for along time but after couple years realized it was a slouch in the power department, but thats why they run forever on sames rings ect., so i sold it an bought an 84 yz80, at time i was like wow what a difference! , but the mx was a good starter bike for little kid.

This is not a 1973 GT-MX 80 unless perhaps the 1974 model tank, fenders, etc. were fitted to a '73 model. I had a brand new (first year model) 1973 GT-MX 80. The '73 has gray paint with purple stripes and white Yamaha badging. The handlebars are for sure original as I could tell by the idiotic, welded on lever mounts which meant the levers were easily broken with even a slower speed crash since the lever mounts could not turn up or down when encountering an impact. The super slippery foot pegs and rear brake pedal also appear to be original. The engine was either transplanted from a GT 80 enduro or else the original engine was vatted or somehow had it's original flat black coating removed and then repainted. 1) It is too glossy. 2) I rode/raced my '73 GT-MX for almost 3 years and the engine paint was only slightly worn off next to the foot pegs and I had big feet and big boots for a kid. -- Lastly, unfortunately the GT-MX was a poor performer in comparison to the XR-75. It had only 5 horsepower and 4 lb/ft of torque and even with my slightly modified bike, an XR-75 would easily beat my bike in a drag race or on the straightaways. While true the more modern motocross 2-strokes of smaller displacement make more power than larger 4-strokes, this bike's engine was far from being in that category. Mine topped out at approximately 37 mph w/ modifications as timed by several older friend's street bike speedometers and then averaged. (High of 40, low of 35) I am sure the bike has been sold but since this video is still posted over a year later, I wanted to help clear up a few things. For 1973 original brochure slideshow, see this video. I had this same brochure as well as one for the 1972 Yamaha Mini Enduro MX brochure. (Last year for the 60cc) 1973 GT-MX here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2WyBlpmwg2RlmHY (EDIT): I forgot to mention the front number plate (small rectangle) is missing and the throttle and cable are not original. The cable curved 90 degrees about 3/4" from exiting the original silver, pot metal housing.

That is not the 1973 GT 80. It had a yellow tear drop with white strips both sides that started on top at front then swung down to bottom of tank flowing to the seat. All the enduros had this gas tank design the p series 50, GT & MX 80 the 100 cc enduro had purple tank, the MX version was silver and redish strip, the 125 cc enduro had blue tank the tank was silvercwith orangish decal strip the CT 175 was enduro only had a copper/rust color with black strip decal no mx version DT 250 was green with decal, mx was silver tank yellow strip decal, DT 360 had redish tank with decal the mx had silver tank the SC 500 was a desert bike no enduro version it had silver tank black & red decal strups. My dad had a yamaha dealership in late 60s through early 80s in northern nj. Bye

i'm Sorry mister but you played the Original Spiel way too much ,plus you Have No Hard evidence other than your pre-sumtion that ,Rider foot pegs, &Everything else you claim to be OEM , Like a Money Grabbing German car thing which will remain nameless have what they dubbed Cirtificate of Authenticity. Part #'s Jive with VIN, Body #, powertrain etc, etc. this gt80 could very easly be brought back to close to OEM even with bike wrecker parts & NOS, New old Stock items. i had a Original Owner 197? Yellow/white/black with all street legal equipment, Headlight, Blinkers, Stop/Tail/Turn rear light in late 1980's bought from a Yamaha fan who had multiple yamahas, also bought a 1978Yamaha RD250 WITH full Vetter fairing & rear vetter Hard Side bags ,the Blue &White stripe bike. both my top 3 best bikes ever after my New 1985 RZ350 &1986RZ500 Steel frame V4 two stroke gp replica.
