I had the exact same problem. I added 6 degree caster shims. And it fixed 99% of the wonder. And now no more trying to go into oncoming traffic etc. Total cost $70 bucks roughly. And they were easy to install. P.S. get the steal shims not the cheap ones. And youll need new longer center pins.

The biggest bang for my wandering problem was replacing all the leaf springs and bushings (all other steering components have been replaced but still wandered) They were so bad that I gained almost 2" of lift, back to OEM height. Added 3-degree positive caster shims while I was at it...absolutely a night and day driving experience for the better. The PO f'ed with the steering box so much to try to fix the problem that it's next on the list. Been thinking about power steering but I kinda like the feel of the road and the mechanical connection to it, but hey, I'm weird.

The best thing I ever did to my 73 cj5 with was go to a WP warrior reverse shackle and then some degree shims along with when I went to a 4" lift. We drove that thing from Missouri to Colorado and Utah at 65 mph for days on end with one finger on the bus wheel. I still say If I get another that will be the first thing I do. My cj6 seems ok But I'll put one on if I start driving it on the hwy more.

You can improve your steering, swap the shackles in the front to the back on those front springs... here in Brazil all CJ5 are from the factory like this. Check your caster also... must be 3 or 4 degrees... you can also adjust your front hubs... check if there is any play on the front tires...

I heard about flipping the shackles, you never know. Everything is up to par with any wheel play, shop manual says caster cannot be changed or adjusted because what is cast at factory is what you get. Toe in is about 1/8" or so. After replacing the rear shackles and bushings it did help. What the gentleman stated below is as good as this 47 year old Jeep will get. From what it was when we 1st got it and what we have now is a 100% improvement. Thanks again

Spring shackle are part of it CJ are notorious for problems with the steering box mounts too. It will flex especially if toe in or out is off makes it far worse. The steering shafts slip joint is also a problem. It has the ability to slip in and out but the slide nuts get worn as well as the universals on the steering shafts . And the bearing on the steering column may be a factor. Note the replacement shafts like the korean OEM is junk and is extremely unsafe cold roll metal very soft. Also many replacement shafts don't allow for the shafts length to vary while driving. They may allow for collapse in an wreck but it needs to be able to slide in and out to prevent steering box and column damage. I seen blinker mechanism broken by these junk shafts. Get some decent spring bushings and shackles too. Tie Rod Ends and Drag Link too. Heavy duty is better than stock. I bought new 78 CJ 5 and others they are all squirrely. Quick steering and you cannot look off for anything. They do take some getting use to. Whatever you do in a CJ do it in a straight line. AMEN. Love my CJ-5's. Off Road they go very well.

I think You may have hit the nail on the head I just bought a 73 CJ five with the same issue I did the same exact thing that you’re doing yet it still does it so I got under there and looked and my spring hanger brackets are toast with a lot of play I dont know if you can do a track bar with leaf springs but im going to research it.
@Pitlane326

Steve thanks for the input, yes I heard about track bars with leaf springs that if you don't have the geometry perfect that something is going to break. I thought of doing something totally temporary like installing a cable or 2 in a cross and take in down a flat road to see what happens. 1st I'm doing the rear shackels and bushings then I'll know everything is new and tight. As the wife says... this is a Tim Allen car on his show, just tinkers with it but is never done. The hangers were pretty easy to change out and think I got lucky buying ones that actually fit. Would love to see and hear how your 73 is coming along.
@robr4662

Just FYI, you shouldn't use a track bar with normal leaf springs. The leaf springs and the track bar will pull the axle in different directions when cycling the suspension causing binding. You may want to check out some polyurethane bushings to put in the spring hangars. They tend to last longer and are a bit stiffer than the rubber, giving you a little more stability.

I bought a tubing bender and straighten them out a bit, the return line was easy but the pressure line was a bitch but long enough. The power steering gear is only about an inch or so from hitting the bottom of the radiator and front grill so it's iffy that a curved tube with a fitting will even fit. I'm going to get a custom one made that is round and flat with the bolt that goes through it and the hose comes out the side, can't remember what those fitting are called. Other than that it is fun and easy to drive just not at top speed. Good luck with yours as this one was not hard to do at all.

Mark, Old CJ's are like horses....They generally go where you point them. Today's vehicles are so much more precise. This vehicle will never handle like them. Slop in the shackles doesn't actually affect this. The universal at the base of the steering column can get loose, but just a fresh pack of grease tightens it up quite a bit. My '74 torque steers quite a bit. It's something you kind of adapt to. If you have ever flown a small plane, you have to compensate with the rudder pedals during takeoff and landing. After awhile you don't even realize it. It took me a year to get used to compensating with the steering wheel during acceleration and deceleration, but perhaps you are just referring to general wandering at an even speed. Recheck your toe-in. You may have a bad tire pulling to one side. Trying rotating them and see if it makes a difference. Loosen those shackles back up, they need to have slop to twist in the trails.
@Pitlane326

Understood, thanks for the advice. I did replace the worn out rear shackles/bushings and seamed to help a bit, mentally think it's better. Don't remember my 72 CJ being like this, but I was young and probably used to driving worn out vehicles. My biggest fear is getting ran over or a head on collision on the 2 lane highway here going into town. Not over correcting the wheel is what I'll have to learn. Now that it has power steering, maybe a smaller steering wheel might help. Thanks again

In my opinion it could be a combination of the looseness of the rear suspension along with very little or no caster angle on the front axle. If the front caster turns out to be the cause then some 5-7 degree leaf spring shims are a good temporary fix.
@Pitlane326
2 жыл бұрын
Linda mentioned the same thing below, I'm unclear on where shims would go? This is a solid axle with cast iron knuckles that have no place for any shims that I can see, unlike "A arm" front suspension. Shop manual says caster can't be adjust because what has been cast "knuckles" at factory is what you get. Sticking a level on the rim the bottom is in about 1/4" narrower than top, meaning, standing back I can see the wheel lean out on top.

@@Pitlane326 How far(degrees) the knuckles are rotated(caster) around the axle tube indeed cannot normally be adjusted. Shims however, bypass this issue by tilting the entire axle assembly. Your front driveline angles may suffer but on-road handling should be much better.

@@robr4662 Oh ok you're saying rotating the whole axel frontwards or backwards. I thought caster is the angle the wheel sits up and down, "plumb" more of the inter or outer tire wear. How does rotating the axle help? To me it's just putting more stress on the U joints. All of this info is educating me on front ends.

You need a Trac bar from the driver side frame rail to the passenger side axle tube ,set on the same angle as the draglink, the you will need a steering box brace from passenger side frame to the very bottom of the steering box housing. And the most important thing you need is 8° of caster angle measured at the knuckles That will make it drive the way you want it to drive
